Default Cosworth 3.8L VQ generates 438hp NA

Just picked up the latest issue of SCC, and their Cosworth 3.8 liter NA build ended up generating 438hp and 359 lb/ft on an engine dyno.

The engine utilized the Cosworth intake manifold, big valve heads, stroker kit made in-house (reportedly for mass production), new Cosworth NA cams, and absolutely gorgeous long-tube headers.

I figured I would post it in the NA forum since the people that visit here, or search here, would be the most interested in this project. It's a pretty awesome build just for the highlights on what a good engineering company puts into their products, but I hope more details come to light about the custom parts and their plans to bring them to market or not. As it sits right now, the SCC articles have been pretty informative, and they can be found here along with videos of the build:

Will- Enjoyed watching the links, but makes me wistful for those type of resources. Cosworth certainly has the heritage and seeing the depth of engineering involved in this project was quite interesting. Now back to the real world...

Why when you can get the 370 and add a 100 shot. Probably get more TQ out of it too.

Don't get me wrong a high NA car is my dream, but it's just not financially smart or feasible by me lol.

Just watched the movies and read the article. Now I am going out to the garage to wash my block. I can assure you I don't have the equipment cosworth does, but i'll manage. Garden hose and degreaser for me.

Awesome!

I priced some of their major components (what you can get now) for an VQ overhaul.

$8239 (short block)
$4635 (ported heads)
$1313 (plenum)
$1399 (cams)
$1190 (ultra race valve spring kit)
$655 (fuel rail)

A screaming 400hp VQDE would be nice, but ($17,431) makes you see the reality of it. Especially when you have 10k (oil coolers/LG radiator, drivetrain components, gauges, exhaust from the block back, ECU, etc.) to finish off a project like this correctly.

If I worked for Cosworth, I'd check my personality at the door too. I'd do MANY things to work there.

I would've done:

4.3 build
High compression 11:5:1
Long tube headers
etc....

They might have made 475-500hp.

it's not Star Search - "Mr. Personality" happens to be one of pioneers of the hobby you enjoy, and I'm sure could teach you a thing or 50 about making a variety of engines both fast and reliable

but Cosworth doesn't make a 4.3 kit nor would have any purpose to (not to mention it introduces sleeves to the picture, which Cosworth also doesn't do). The 3.8 was done as a design excerise to help promote their forthcoming stroker kit, which also may end up being supplied to various race teams in Europe for a few different series. The engine is high compression already, and bumping it even an extra point really would not amount to any meaningful gains. I don't think this really was the best platform to pick for the contest overall, but it's a cool build to follow anyway!
