Default Reverse lights only on in nuetral

Is this the reverse light switch? Not sure how it would be if they come on but idk. They are only on in reverse. I’ve replaced the neutral position switch already because i’m getting a code about it. Check engine light went off for a bit but came back on. Prob gonna have to drop the tranny to get the wiring harness un wedged from between the car and tranny. Whoever messed with it before was an idiot. Both problems are prob from the harness but just wanted to ask around.

It sounds like the harnesses to the neutral switch and back-up switch on your transmission have been reversed. The neutral switch is on the passenger side of the transmission, while the back-up switch is on the driver side.

Yeah i already replaced the nuetral switch on passenger side. Guess i’ll try replacing the reverse switch next. What’s the box that has fins on it below the reverse switch?

I'm not sure what the box is.

I don't think the problem is with the switches themselves, but with the harness. Before you replace any switch, check if both switches are working. The neutral switch should show continuity when in neutral , but not when in any gear. The back-up switch should show continuity only when in reverse. Since your back-up lights come on with the transmission in neutral, the harness for the back-up lights may be connected to the neutral switch by mistake.

Kudos to both of you! Karlt, for posting great advice that ultimately resolved OP's problem, and OP for not just getting it resolved and never showing back up without letting us know. This may help another user one day and this is a prime example of something I would like to see more of on this forum.
