5fwy is faster it will take you maybe 6 hours depends on how fast you're driving. but if you want to go sightseeing while driving 101 and 1 is better.

If you can at all avoid it, stay away from the 101-- it runs right by the mudslide at La Conchita, and traffic will likely be very bad or completely shut down based on resuce and recovery efforts there. Be careful out there.

5 is the best way to go. And that's "San Francisco" Or "San Fran" never Frisco.

It's San Francisco, not San Fran or Frisco or SF or any other bogus shortened form. You never hear Tony Bennet sing "I left my heart in that place called Frisco" do you?

What everybody else said...take the 5 fwy.

You then can take the grapevine through Gilroy (I think it's the 252 or something like that) to the 101N.

That's the way I usually go because I like to stop off at Bay 101.

I used to go back and forth SF and LA! I miss SF! They have the best Chinese food!!!!

The fastest way would be to use hwy 152 to cut across to 101.

5 north
152 east
101 north

Oh yeah, there are a lot of cops on I-5. Watch out. And when you get close to Fresno, close all the vents.... the cows stink.

I've driven both ways coming back from Portland, Oregon. The 5 was much easier and faster. The 101 sucked because it was late night/early morning, and mostly dense fog.

On the 5, there was a cool guy in an old 280Z who gave me a thumbs up. It was just after seing Napoleon Dynamite, and he looked like the uncle. I laughed for like 50 miles.
