Police Launch Campaign In Connection With 'Tokyo Drift'
RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Riverside police seeking to clamp down on car racing are gearing up for the opening of "The Fast and The Furious: Toyko Drift" by staffing informational booths near theaters.
The movie opens Friday, and police want to minimize racing this weekend, said Steven Frasher of the Riverside Police Department.
City officials have expressed concern about the number of racing-related accidents in recent months.
In April, police seized 11 vehicles and ticketed more than 50 motorists in a crackdown on racers on Tyler Street near Highway 91. Many of tHe cars were customized for racing or had "illegal emissions' equipment.
In May, a Riverside man was fatally injured when he raced his Dodge Dakota pickup truck with another Dodge Dakota and struck a third vehicle making a turn into a business parking lot. The man was fatally injured when he was thrown from the truck in accident on Indiana Avenue near Tyler Avenue and Highway 91.
Police hope to discourage illegal and dangerous driving by staffing booths between 4 and 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at the Regal Theaters at the Riverside Plaza on Central Avenue; Cinema Star on Mission Grove Avenue; and University Village Cinemas on University Avenue, Frasher said.
"The Fast and The Furious: Toyko Drift" is the third installment in franchise about unsanctioned car racing. "Toyko Drift" is set in Japan and features a technique in which drivers throw their cars into slides that are more or less controlled.
Police will discuss the dangers of racing, and Perris Auto Speedway officials will be available to talk about legitimate racing -- on the track.
A former street racer also will be on hand to discuss the hazards of the pursuit. Souped-up cars also will be displayed in theater parking lots, Frasher said.
"In the event the education part is ignored, officers in the immediate area will be prepared to enforce violations," Frasher said.

I agree it's a bunch of paranoia, but I'm still going to watch out a bit more than usual Z's will be targeted more than usual.
oh yeah, I'm actually looking forward to the movie, I liked the first 2 for what it's worth. How often do you see a movie that has cool fast cars in it as the main actors...call me cheesy but I like watching this stuff
