um
there will never be coverage for running on a track. You are at your own risk. There was a bmw m3 which rolled probably last year at buttonwillow. Basically they just dragged him out and said clean off any of the track numbers and call insurance say you flipped on the road.

can you supply some info on this driving clinic? I would be interested in going.

I wish I could teach at this Performance Driving Clinic, but I've got a wedding to attend that day.

As for the rental helmets, I believe they provide washable head socks to keep the helmets themselves fresh, if that's what you're worried about.

For those that will be attending the clinic, come to the track the evening before and check out the Cal Club/SCCA 6-hour Enduro on Saturday night. The race starts at 5pm and goes until 11pm. Night racing is something to behold, and the evening weather in Buttonwillow is usually very pleasant. The track has live timing and scoring via a TV monitor so you can keep track of all the action, and all spectators have access to the paddock area. I should be driving a Spec Miata for San Dimas Auto Racing and possibly an Audi A4 1.8T Quattro for Hartmann Motorsport.

I wouldn't be surprised if the track manager, Les Phillips, would let Clinic students into to the track for free that evening, but you'd have to ask him. Motels in Buttonwillow are under $50 a night, so there's no great expense to come up early.

Assuming it doesn't sell out, you can register the day of the clinic, if I'm not mistaken. Ask Les (lesrace@aol.com) to be sure.

BTW, Buttonwillow is a fun track to drive, and a great training facility. I say this having driven Laguna Seca, Sears Point, Mid-Ohio, Portland, etc. It offers a nice combination of fast and slow corners, a bit of elevation, plenty of run-off, and not too much in the way of walls.

Registration is in the mail today.

This sounds like it's going to be a blast. Fun driving without having to worry about CHP. Can't wait!

Yeah, a bit of a drive, but worth it I'm sure. I'll be heading up Saturday and staying at one of the fine Buttonwillow area motels. Looks like the Saturday evening entertainment is set with the Cal Club/SCCA Enduro.

I'll be the short white dude in the SS base with borla exhaust.

Anybody else going to make the trip?

Here's some info on the area hotels from Cal Club racers: Buttonwillow Area Motels.

I believe anyone can come to watch after paying a small gate fee ($10?). You may even be able to get a ride with an instructor, if that floats your boat. Spectators cannot ride with other students, however. Check with Les (lesrace@aol.com) or anyone at the track office to be sure.

hi scott,

are you familiar with what is part of the safety inspection? my driver side window motor is dead and that window is stuck in the up position while i wait for the new part (which is backordered ). hopefully it'll be fixed before the 27th, but i was wondering if that will cause me to fail the safety inspection tia.

You should contact Les Phillips at the track office (661-764-5333 or lesrace@aol.com) to find out what the rule is regarding door glass, but I do believe that the driver's door window must be down while the car is on track. This is so safety marshals can get to a disabled driver and so that broken glass remains in the door in the event of contact sufficient to break it.
