Used Oil Analysis tests from member's rides have confirmed that the German Castrol 0W-30 gave the best wear results of any oil for the DE engines. As for the HR engines, that has yet to be confirmed due to the small number of samples, though so far it seems to be giving the same great results as it did with the VQDE crowd.

As to why we are using an 0W-30 vs. the 5W-30: German Castrol is a thinner weight at cold temps (before start-up), and so flows easier when cold, giving better protection. After it heats up, it behaves like a thicker 5W would, giving good high temp protection. I got this from Will (Resolute), the oil guru:

As discussed previously, multi-grade oils are designed to behave like two different oil weights at two different temperatures. Since an oil is thicker with colder temperatures, a lower weight oil flows better, and better protects the engine during start-up since it is easier to pump to critical areas. So, a 0W-xx oil is a better oil for start-up, especially in cold temperatures. When the oil heats up and starts to thin out, it becomes a heavier weight oil just like a 5W-xx or 10W-xx oil would. So, a 0W-xx oil is only a “thinner” oil when it’s cold- where it is a benefit. At operating temperatures, a 0W-30 is the same weight as a 5W or 10W-30, just as a 0W-40 is the same weight as a 15W-40, etc... Therefore, 0W-xx oils tend to be better suited for year-round use in any climate, since they flow better in cold temps but become as thick as any other similar grade oil when hot.
This is from the Oil Analysis and Info Thread., a sticky found at the top of the Engine and Drivetrain forum.

My latest UOA is attached. First drain tested was Nissan OEM oil and filter. Latest is M1 0w-40 with M1 filter.

From the charts that have been posted, it seems as if Castrol Syntec 5-30 full synthetic is one of the best oils for the Z?

I hope this is true. I went out and bought a tub and filled my car up with it....

I was under the impression from this thread and others that you want the "European" Formula which is Syntec 0w-30 not 5w-30. Post your 5w-30UOA here when you get it.

Has anyone done any tests on this oil?

http://www.lubricants.elf.com/lub/lu...6?OpenDocument.

It seems to meet the same specs as the Castrol European Blend.

Resolute,

Can you review my analysis and let me know what you think. I value your opinion more than blackstones.

p.s. most of these miles on the UOA are from my trip to the NC/TN and back from Jerz. At least 1,000 of the miles were driven very hard.

It looks fine. No anomalies or high wear, the oil was in great physical shape and you could run another 3k miles on it if you wanted. Si is just a bit higher than average for the mileage, so if you're on stock air filters, you might want to consider changing them by the next oil change. Otherwise, no issues.

2nd oil change this week. Car now at 7kmi. Switching upto Amsoil 5w-30 from Mobi1
With a K&N oil filter. I may send the Mobil1 out to be tested.

edit: I requested a test kit. So should be 3-4 weeks turn around I would imagine.

Default viscosity

I have noticed that in my 2003 350Z manual, it calls for the typical 5-30w oils. BUT, it says you CAN use up to a 10-40w oil if your operating within certain temps, etc etc.
bla bla we all know this BUT, I just bought a 2008 model 350Z and noticed that the owners manual calls for 5-30W and does not discuss any deviation at all. there is NO mention of any other weights of oil.
In fact, that standard chart that adorns nearly every owners manual that shows a temp. chart and corresponding oil viscosities is NOT even in the book.
Is the implication to be drawn here that the 07-08 engine requires different oil from the 03-06 models???

My general feeling on this, is that the EPA has requested automakers to run different oils in their engines in an attempt to slightly increase efficiency. Heavier weight oils are less efficient in general, so...it sort of makes sense.

My next engine will be built (with clearances of my choice) and I'll be running 15W50 just because I want to run slightly looser bearing clearances. If you really wanted to get analytical you could compare the bearing specs between the DE and HR and see if there is any need to not run heavier, but I personally doubt there is.

Yea I know from where your coming buddy.
I happen to have bought all the oil the do a change for my 2003 and have to now use it for my 2008. Its Synthetic Motul 300 10w-40.
I only run my car in the summer, dont drive it under 50 degrees so you would think, the 40w would not be a problem but it troubled me a bit not to see it listed as acceptable like it was in the 2003. Mike

I think an oil change for us HR owners is 5.18 quarts if changing filter too... Someone correct me

I don't get any of these "oil analysis" tests...

I'd like to figure out what oil is best.

I'd like something readily available, I can buy at Autozone, Kragen / Checkers / O Reilly's

I live in Arizona, it's mostly hot

what should I use during the summer, and the winter?

Thanks
