what makes that a good option?

I thought a thinner oil was better for cold protection, initial start-up.

I figured a thicker oil in heat would be ideal

How do you guys read the oil anaylsis tests?

If you are really interested in reading the UOAs and would like to know more, please see Resolute's original thread. We are all in his debt for this wealth of information.

https://my350z.com/forum/engine-and-...-and-info.html

My guess is you don't want to read that, so know this. UOAs are tests done on used oil, looking for metals that indicate engine wear and testing how well the oil stood up to use. You are not too far off with the "thinner and thicker" logic, however the oil recommended to you (M1 0w-40) tends to run "thinner," however even this can be misleading as it will still provide adequate protection at cooler temps (hence the 0w.)

To answer your question, two oils that have proven themselves and are readily available at your local auto parts store:

German Castrol, or "European Formula 0w-30"
AND
Mobil 1 0w-40.

Both have had excellent results for both VQ35DEs and VQ35HRs.

I read the thread, a lot of info.

I'm still kinda curious, since I live in Arizona where it's always fairly hot if I would benefit from running a thicker oil from the start?

I know at operating temperature they are the same, at least 5w-30 / 10w-30 but would I benefit from runing a 10w/15w from the start?

For Arizona I was thinking10w-40 ( winter ) / 15w-40 ( summer )

Did an oil change yesterday. 3,000 miles on German Castrol 0W-30 with Mobil 1 oil filter. Filled up with same oil but with K&N oil filter this time. Will send used oil to Blackstone to get analyzed soon.

Received the UOA today. This was with German Castrol 0W-30 with Mobil oil filter for 3,000 miles. I used Mobil 1 5w-30 with M1 oil filter prior to this.

I and a few other people had the same issue when used Mobil 1 5W-30 , that's why I switched over to GC 0W-30. However, I didn't check to see if GC was burning off or not on last oil change.

I have been a lifelong user and drove over 600,000 miles on M1,I have a 2008 and have used M1 since I purchased this beauty at 24K on the odometer.I have seen the multiple threads on M1 and I am going to stick with it...

I havent had an oil analysis and dont plan on it,but props to the guys who are putting up results and others who are breaking it down.

Did another oil change this past weekend. Already sent the sample to Blackstone. The last oil used was German Castrol 0W-30 and K&N oil filter for 2,500 miles and 9 months time.

However, this time I went with Castrol Edge 5W-30 oil and Purolator One oil filter. I will send another sample when I do another oil change in November before winter storage. Looking forward to see how Castrol Edge 5W-30 fare with GC 0W-30.

I received the UOA a few days ago. German Castrol 0w-30 is pretty good so far. My next test will be Castrol Edge 5w-30 oil (with Purolator One filter).

^If you're planning to go with Amsoil, why not go with 5W30 instead 0W30? Am I missing something about Amsoil 0W-30?

Does anyone know if warranty will be void if anything happens to your motor and they see you have 0W30 instead of 5W30?

theres not a big difference between the two according to UOA's.

however, i live in the northwest and despite being july, it still gets pretty cold over night. the 0w30 will operate better on start up from what i know.

^That makes sense. If you can find a deal with M1 0W-40 and M1 oil filter for under $30, then go with that.

hmm. well i used to be a die hard mobil 1 fan until all the information ive been reading lately. i suppose the 0w40 is good for VQ's so i dont worry there.

$30 bucks seems kind of hard to find unless there's a special going on. what store would you get yours from?
