Not sure I am Brad. Standard GTX 5W-30 does well in our motors based on Will's data as long as you change it at regular intervals. I bought 5 quart containers of GTX 5W-30 at Walmart for $12 per container.

So I have 1,500 miles on my 08 HR now and I bought Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w30 few weeks ago at Costco when it was on sale... I'm thinking of going to dealership today and have them change it for $25

Yay or nay on M1 5w30 for first oil change at 1,500?

Please let me know

Well, I would say nay, but can't really say so definitively. All I know is you won't do any harm by extending your use of mineral oil to say 4,500 or even 7,500 miles, but there are those who would say that switching to synth too early is a bad thing. Thus, staying with mineral for a change or two won't hurt anything at all, but may well help.

I personally am going to wait until around 7,000 miles, after reading way, way too many oil threads. I currently have around 1,400 miles on my Z. The way I look at it, I still have a new engine and frequent oil changes during these early stages are imperative. Using a synthetic oil, even if it isn't harmful to the break-in of your engine, is a waste because I'd just be throwing high-quality oil out before it was time for it to go. Thus, it is a no-lose scenario to go with standard mineral oil. I recommend a Castrol 5-30 GTX. It works great in the Z and is affordable.

To argue against myself, however, I'm pretty sure that BMW and other high-end cars come out of the factory with synthetic oil.

Good luck with whatever you do,

~Brad

Too late now. I already went today around 6 and got an oil change done with M1 5w30. I am not sure how much Castrol 5-30 GTX is but I bought M1 for less than $20 for 6 quarts and only 5 quarts were used today so it's not that expensive. If I didn't buy M1 month ago I would have bought GTX and used it but a case of M1 on my balcony started going on my nerves! lol...

By the way, how much does it cost to send your oil for oil analysis? I was thinking of sending my oil when I get oil out at the next oil change.

I think it was around $20 + shipping. The company I used was Blackstone Labs out of Fort Wayne IN.

Searched through here but didn't find what I was looking for -
1. Track use - if you had to pick, would you still use the 0W-40? Something else? Keeping in mind that heat is a factor...
2. Assume for #1 that the rest of the 48k miles to date I used 5W-30 M1, and will be back on my next change.

Any suggestions?

Dang that's helpful, now why didn't I just search on Ester-based oils? I only get 13 thread hits on that vs. I forget how many on track or racing...

I guess it would be expecting too much to ask for something simple like the following:

Brand(s) _____________
product(s)_____________
Weight(s) _____________

"Is an ester base oil better for racing than daily driving?

My opinion is that high Ester oils are better as a race oil, than a street oil. The real advantage Ester synthetic oils have over other synthetics is shear stability in the face of extreme heat. That benefit is going to be realized best in racing, and since high ester base oils have to rely on the additive package to offset some of the negative aspects of the ester base oil, such as moisture stability and elastomer compatibility issues, the typical wear protection of a good PAO or G3 in start/stop, short trip, and cold start stress will lend itself best to a street engine.

Therefore, I think the value of Ester base oils are best realized in turbo VQ engines that see heavy track use, since they are seeing higher temps, and therefore the most important value for them is an oil’s HTHS score and extreme heat stability. Esters tend to shine in these circumstances. I think for daily-driven 350Z’s, a high Ester oil is a waste of money and not doing any favors for the engine. Of course, as I have already mentioned, a UOA should be the judge over how well an oil performs in your engine for your conditions, not speculation on base stocks."

Now all I have to do is figure out which specific brands and products are Ester-based synthetics, turn the decoder ring and find out which one of those has the best HTHS score w/o compromising too much elsewhere?

Dammmet, I'm 10% of the way home, woo hoo!!!

More 5W-30 M1 it is...or I can just ask someone more helpful.

and before anyone says "only UOA can say", that's the point - I want to take the oil in the car with almost 5k of street use out, get a UOA, replace it, get another UOA on oil considered optimal or "best" for NA VQ motor track use.

eyes hurt now from reading so much on all these pages packed with info.
Question:
I just got a 2007 Z, and it only got 5300 miles on it, the seller only put synthetic 5w30 in it (not sure of brand) now, I plan on changing the oil out this weekend. recomendations on what to do to make sure its broken/braking in correctly? and what oil recomendation. its a DD, and will see some track use, but not yet. cost for the oil isn't a big option as I want the best protection and service for the car.
Thanks in advance.
