Default DE vs HR sound

Stock for stock does the DE and HR have the same overall sound? Just curious.

Yes, they sound the same. If the HR is louder I couldn't tell the difference. Of course there is a difference at 7500rpms compared to 6700rpms lol. But up until that point I would have to say they are the same. The only one that is different is the Nismo Z (proud owner haha) and the stock sound is incredible. Pop some CAI's on and it sounds like a beast! Kinda like a V-7...meaner than a V-6 but not quite as mean as the V-8's

lol @ ''V7"

But you're 100% right about the Nismo's sound. It's very different from other 07+ Z's, but sounds about the same as a normal 07+ Z with a catback, because that's basically what it is haha.

I had the pleasure of driving a Nismo Z to a car show last weekend. It had 34 miles on it when I got it and 52 miles on it when I was done with it

Could it be that the HR NISMO sounds better because it comes with a NISMO exhaust as opposed to a crappy exhaust that comes with the lower HR models?

To be honest the HR is a tad bit louder @ idle and @ WOT it is noticeable (slightly different tone/growl). This is due to a couple of things but mainly the the dual intake system and better flowing exhaust manifolds. When upgrading the exhaust the difference becomes very noticeable both @ idle but even more @ WOT. At the GTG's that I go to here in Northern California we get a big mix of DE & HR owners and when you hear 2 exact same exhaust next to each other the HR is always noticeably louder.

The 07+ OEM cats outflow the older ones by a small margin worth noting, but considering how effective cats are at muffling the exhaust note, its just another factor to consider.

The HR sounds much more refined than that of the DE. The exhaust note is far less raspy, and it revs much smoother than the DE. I can say this as I have owned a well modified VQ35DE 350z prior to the Nismo (HR).

Subtle differences make the difference.

I have an 08 and I drove my friend's 03 around a little bit and I know someone with an 04 and 06. The Rev-up "warbles" more and has a weird resonance when you're engine braking or revving down. The HR sounds much smoother than either one but it still sounds largely the same

I had an '03 and now have a '07 Z. I'd say when stock the '07 has a little more "sound" to it. When a Nismo exhaust the '07 is lke twice as loud as the '03 with a Nismo exhaust. The '07 intake with K&N drop ins at WOT is as loud as the '03 with a Popcharger. Power wise the '07 feels more powerful.

The 07 I feel is much louder.. My friend has an 03 and I noticed the difference in sound. He took the catbck exhaust I had and put it on his car with high flow cats and I feel my 07 with the exhaust was louder then the same exhaust and HFC's on it. I have just test pipes and a y-pipe now and I feel mine is alotttttt more louder then his catbck with hfc..

HRs are louder, at lower rpms at least. Last time I was at a meet, ppl asked me if I had an aftermarket exhaust bc they heard me while I was pulling in. I was the only HR Z there, LOL, everyones like oh you got the dual intakes!

Really? It's interesting because I think that my '07 sounds more quiet than my '03 did. The intakes are a bit more noticeable, but the exhaust note is not as baritone as the DE's. Even with my Nismo exhaust the HR is fairly reserved in comparison. Guess I need to put my HR next to a DE and do a comparo.
