Default OFFICIAL HR aftermarket clutch thread

Lets here from everyone with an aftermarket clutch on their HR. Main reason I want to start this is to actually see how widespread the CSC issue is.

DO NOT POST:
opinions, this thread is for facts and experience
if you still have the stock clutch
useless comments like "cool" or "sweet" or "your CSC is gonna grenade"

keep this thread clutter free, I don't want it blowing up into 38 pages of useless 3 word posts!

MODS:
Please help keep this thread clean by deleting posts as described above.

Here are the questions:

1. What brand clutch and flywheel?

2. How many miles have you had it and how many miles total on your car?

3. How do you drive it?

4. Have you had any problems with the CSC?

5. Have you done anything to address the CSC, was its preventative or as a result of a failure.

6. What other mods do you have / how much power?

7. Comments / anything else you want to add.

1. What brand clutch and flywheel?

JWT Clutch and Flywheel

2. How many miles have you had it and how many miles total on your car?

3000 on clutch (and CSC)/13000 on car

3. How do you drive it?

Some drag/roadcourse but mostly street. I do get on it though (WOT, hard shifting, etc.)

4. Have you had any problems with the CSC?

Funny you mention this, I was about to post and update one of the other clutch threads but then I saw this. My CSC started leaking today. I am driving down to the keys Friday morning with the SFZCC so I have already started disassembly to replace it before then. I picked up a new CSC from my local dealer today.

5. Have you done anything to address the CSC, was its preventative or as a result of a failure.

I will be doing this next time it fails. I wanted to do it this time but the time constraints I have to adhere to do not allow me to do the conversion.

6. What other mods do you have / how much power?

GTM TT and supporting mods. ~470whp DJ and ~400rwtq DJ

7. Comments / anything else you want to add.

Other than the CSC issues, this clutch and flywheel setup is holding my ~400rwtq beautifully. The drivability is almost like stock just with a slightly heavier pedal.

For the people that haven't figured it out:
CSC = clutch slave cylinder

I have a 2008 350Z nismo v. (US spec), I purchased an OS Giken twin clutch STR2 CD (w/flywheel), the Wilwood Master Cylinder, and the HD CSC from Zspeed performance. I didn't get an instruction manual or the bearing that came with the clutch kit. My question is, "do I need to buy a bearing, trim a bolt or buy a new bolt for the clutch kit." I've changed regular stock clutches before with no issues, until I came upon my Z. Also, DOT Fluid 3&4, is all they sell here on Guam, what other suggestions can I use to make this racing clutch match up without burning the fluid?

What you have will bolt right in, Nothing else is needed except the pilot bushing that is in the mail to you. It's a straight forward clutch install with the exception of the twin plate clutch, you have to make sure the disk are in the right direction when installing, Put them in the way they are assembled when the clutch arrived to you and you'll be fine.

Dot 3-4 brake fluid is all you need for the hydraulics. Just buy a quality brand.

Here is a link of the TQ specs to install the OS Giken clutch with.

Joe is that you?

Thanks for the info...this would help a whole lot, now that I don't have to buy a set of bolts.

quick question though?
I was wondering about the stage 2 brake kit on your web site, if I could do away with the floating rotors kit, for my stock Brembos?

I will be making another major purchase sometime this month or so for some upgrades on cooling and exhaust parts.

It was great doing business with you,
Joe and those at Zspeedperformance.com

Here are the questions:

1. What brand clutch and flywheel?

Southbend DXD Billet Steel Flywheel, Soutbend Stage 2 Endurance dual friction clutch.

2. How many miles have you had it and how many miles total on your car?

61k miles on car, 6k miles on SB clutch/flywheel setup

3. How do you drive it? As hard as traffic allows.

4. Have you had any problems with the CSC?

The OEM CSC failed at 40k miles, in a pinch i replaced it with another oem.

5. Have you done anything to address the CSC, was its preventative or as a result of a failure.

I replaced the CSC with a Zspeed heavy duty CSC as well as Wilwood master cylinder when installing the Southbend Clutch/Flywheel. Removing the clutch hydraulic "orifice block" made a world of difference when bleeding the clutch.

6. What other mods do you have / how much power?

Injen Long Tube Intakes, Stillen True Duals Catback, Uprev Tuned. No dyno #s but expecting something a little better than stock

7. Comments / anything else you want to add.

Modifying the clutch pedal to allow more adjust-ability is a must IMHO. Being able to dial in your clutch engagement point and pedal travel is heaven when driving a mod'd car with a quick engaging clutch.

1. What brand clutch and flywheel?

Southbend DXD Billet Steel Flywheel, Soutbend Stage 2 Endurance dual friction clutch.

2. How many miles have you had it and how many miles total on your car?

Car has 52k, clutch has only been installed for 100 miles

3. How do you drive it?

Not very aggressive, there's way too much traffic in Houston. The stock clutch was already showing signs of slipping when I purchased the car at 35k miles

4. Have you had any problems with the CSC?

Replaced the CSC with ZSpeed CSC when the new clutch went in

5. Have you done anything to address the CSC, was its preventative or as a result of a failure.

See above

6. What other mods do you have / how much power?

Power mods, I just have JWT intakes and Nismo S-Tune exhaust

7. Comments / anything else you want to add.

Bought from Joe@ZSpeed who was pleasant to deal with, would recommend them if you're going this route.

The clutch pedal is a little bit stiffer, I'd probably say 30% stiffer so it's not going to be a problem for most people. Below 2000 RPM's there is a little clutch/flywheel rattle, it's not noticeable to me when I have the radio on and it's not too loud. I replaced the OEM transmission fluid with new OEM transmission fluid about 10k miles ago but did again with Motel 300 Gear when the new clutch went in.

Impressions so far (100 miles) : I'm still granny driving it because of break-in but it's so much easier to drive. I can drive this thing smoother than I've ever driven my car before.

1000 MILE UPDATE: Clutch engagement position feels like stock. I don't notice the stiffness of the clutch anymore so either I got used to it or it softened up a little. First gear takes a higher rev to smoothly engage, that took a little getting used to. Been driving more aggressive the past few days and it does seem to rev a little quicker. I'm liking the clutch very much though, would recommend!

The release point (where it starts to grab) will start to rise a little as the clutch breaks in fully and level off about half way up normally. It takes a few hundred miles for everything to settle in, Pedal effort will probably get a touch lighter also.

I actually like how low the release point is now and was hoping it would stay how it is, lol. I guess my next mod will be the new RJM bracket because my pedal has developed a clicking noise on the way up.
