After quite a long time of deliberation I have decided I want to keep my stock rims, because I like the style of my "08 rims. However in the near future I will need wider rims/tires due to a substantial power increase. I was wondering what your guy's oppinions are on getting stock rims widened?

You like the stock wheels THAT much? How much will it cost?

 

Well it looks like it's going to be approximately $200 a wheel to widen them 2". So that comes to a total of around $800 plus shipping. Seems like a good deal for a set of 18x10 front and 18x10.5 rear.

 

I've seen this also, however, I've always thought that this was unsafe, changing the structural form of it that much.

 

You will also need spacers to do it properly to set the offset back to stock or to a more aggressive stance. A 25mm rear spacer would pretty much return the offset back to +30. So with that added in your looking at $1100 total. I nice set of Rota can be had for that, a few more pennies will get you Enkei.

 

That is a valid point, however I can choose to widen any part of the rim, so with a carefully thought out widening position I can have a flush offset. Also I want to stick with 18's and I havent found any good looking 18's that are wider than 9.5".

 

If you look at your spoke design , it will be dam near impossible to widen the outer part of the wheel. If it is possible the will charge you a hell of a lot more to rebuild the spoke design.

Ideally you would add width equally to inner and out to do it right. But with the spoke design all width would be added on the inside and spacers will be needed.

 

Does it look safe to you?

I can see how you could possibly widen a wheel in a more safer way, but it is probably not worth the hustle - I doubt anyone except top wheel producers have proper equipment to do so.

 

It will be a unique wheel, but difficult to do well. Is the new wheel out of round? Can it be balanced?

 

widening wheels is done on motorcycles all the time. In fact I did it to my Yammi Warrior. It worked great, right up until I got run off the road and went over a curb. Ended up with a nice, almost square wheel. In the cycling world, widened factory wheels cannot/are not sold with DOT certification.......IE...."for track use only". I'd spend the extra clams and get aftermarket wheels.

 

The company that does them guarantes that they will be true round and can easily be balanced with only the smallest amound of weight needing to be added.

Well....I have a G35 Coupe with the ray's 19". I really like the wheels, in fact I paid $1000 to get them polished. Going FI next month and thought I'd widen the rears out to help with traction. I need new rear tires anyway. SO I'm only lokking at about $500.

Wish I could widen them in a way that I wouldn't need the spacers but can't visualize a way that would work.

Thinking of going to 10" rears but want to make sure and go to a size that has a couple options on tire manufactures. Guess I'll start researching tire/wheel info....

Where is the substantial power increase that is uncontrollable by OEM wheels and tires?

 

If you still doing this then just move the back wheels to the front and widen the front, that would be better idea.
