Questions regarding low milage tire wear
2008 new350Z with 6400 miles Showing rear tire ware . I have been told that the rear tires supplied (new car) due to rear wheel drive will wear out by 12,ooo miles or less.

I got a little over 22,000 on my first set.
Are you getting even tire wear? If not, you probably need an alignment. Have you checked the tread depth or are you just "assuming" by eye?

yeah i hear ya man. I had slicks on the back after 21,000 on the potenzas. just keep them bitches aligned properly and watch the jump starts and it should last a little longer than 12,000

I believe you can expect to get at least 12K miles (and probably more) on your rears, even if drive very aggressively. As Davidv mentions, some drivers get close to 30K on the OEM rears.
If your main concern is getting maximum mileage on your tires, consider all-season performance tires. These wear better, ride more comfortably, and are less noisy. This tire type isn’t commonly available past a 245mm width, and wont’ perform well at higher speeds (i.e., the tire will heat more the faster you go and the harder you drive.)
If you want wide tires with consistent performance from low to high speed, you should stay with summer performance tires (and accept the faster wear and higher cost).
Hope this helps,

Dude... I am on my second set of rear Potenza ReO40's!! I have only 11,000miles on the car. My fronts are original and have a ton of tread. I drive the Z like it ought to be. I fought with both Nissan and Bridgestone on the first set and they agreed to give me one tire and I had to buy the other at cost. I had to pay for install. The Re040's are 140 wear. They are almost RACING tires. If you drive on mostly asphalt roads, they will be eaten up quick. I am trying to get the remainder of the summer out of them, but, next summer will be replacing with a harder tire. Not sure I need a tire rated at 175mph or so. Anyway, you can expect the original tires to wear fast in the rear. Lots of luck.

^^ The compound used to make summer-performance tires is very hard. That's necessary to maintain consistence performance through a wide speed-range, up to very high speed. At higher speeds and when the tires heat, they don't soften as do passenger tires.
That's why they are noisy.
