It's hard to argue with everyone saying I'm wrong though. I doubt my car is an exception.

Is there only a problem upon launching or hard cornering? What should I be looking for? I drive it pretty hard, but don't track it or anything like that.
Read this old explanation of the 3% rule.

I too doubt your car is the exception. I suspect you have other problems with VDC/TCS. Just because you don't get a VDC Off light or CEL, doesn't mean that something like VDC/TCS is working correctly.

The most common occurance of VDC kicking in unexpectedly is when you accelerate through a curve. Most people see it when entering an Interstate highway on a curved ramp, they are accelerating fast and making a rather tight turn.

And just to clarify, I never tied your ABS/VDC/Slip problems to your tire size. I was only pointing out that if you were having other problems with it (whether cause by shims, crank sensor, etc.), those would mask "normal" VDC issues like tire sizes. Go re-read post #21

Gyotar, I read your postings on this thread and would like to offer some comments.

First of all, your tire sizes are incorrect (if I’m reading your post #36 correctly). If your car is VDC-equipped, a taller tire on the front than the rear isn’t a good idea. I also believe you misinterpret the “3% rule.” Your tires are 3% too tall on the front and 0.72% too short on the rear. That means you’re off two different directions, and you are actually >3% as far as VDC function.

I see that you have experienced VDC related problems in the past, but you now believe that is corrected. Assuming your VDC module is working correctly, you may still be experiencing subtle issues that may not be obvious. I know this from personal experience.

My car has VDC. I run an all-square winter tire/wheel setup to allow rotating my snow tires (it’s no fun buying snow tires so I go for maximum mileage on these).

Here is what I notice running all-square if I am not vigilant maintaining tire pressures and allow the rear tires to lose more pressure than the fronts:

I will experience a very subtle (I didn’t even notice this at first) power loss. In fact it was an instant on/off of the TCS component in my VDS. I don’t get the SLIP light if this happens while driving in a straight line. I do know that my VDC is working correctly because I get the SLIP light when driving on ice and the car slips or the back-end slides out.

I’m also experiencing another hardly noticeable VDC/TCS issue right now. I still have my summer performance tires on (they are staggered and sized correctly), and because the temps here are dropping below 40 degrees F, I notice a very minor loss of power. Obviously TCS is toggling very quickly due to lack of grip in cold weather, but not enough to trigger the SLIP light. …Time to get my winter tires on.

My point is you may be experiencing some very minor interference and not even notice this. “Taller fronts than rears” is not a good setup. When either your fronts or rears need replacement, I would make sure that the fronts are not taller than the rears.

I stand corrected. I guess in my case it is subtle enough to escape detection. The only time I see a SLIP with power loss is when I launch and go to WOT, but I assume that the tires are slipping and TCS is kicking in.

I just bought new tires but I guess I'll drop to a 30 series in the front next round of tires.

Wait a minute… You’re not done yet!

Now that you have the tires mounted, we need a report on how those renegade sizes work for you. You should be OK if your car does not have VDC or TCS (I doubt that just ABS would be a problem here).

And… Please comment on ride comfort with those “covered wagon-size” wheels. I would think the ride is a little harsh with such a “pneumatic cripple.”

For sure… That’s why my350z.com is so much fun.

Someone can’t fit a wheel that actually fits, but he doesn’t notice there is a “protective bolt” in place. Someone else points out the problem almost immediately in the thread, but the first party doesn’t get it. Then other people go so far as to post pictures (and even with the bolt in place and removed).

In the meantime we degenerate into a discussion about tire sizing and VDC problems. And… all the while the unfortunate OP is still just trying to get his front wheel mounted (trying to figure out this “bolt thing”).

And, finally, he gets the wheel on and even takes the time to post pics. But, a yahoo (that would be me ) won’t let it die, and now wants more info about his tires.

jcer understands, and he takes it all in stride. Notice that he never gets upset.

You gotta love it…
