Default My Complaint

5000 miles. 1200 mile break in. Canyon Roads. 200 mile trips. Forget all the weekly washing and waxing. Forget the plastic. Forget the grease marks on the windows. Forget that you can't recirculate without the air condition set "on".

My complaint is coming to a stop. Turning off the radio, and listening to a sports car that sounds like a truck.

Yes it's great after 3000 rpm. At 750 rpm, no, it doesn't sound as good as my 280 or 300 turbo nor my supra.

At idle, it sounds like a truck.

My complaint.

Mine sounds like a sports car. Maybe they screwed up and put an old truck exhaust system on your's?

Funny...I feel kind of the opposite. I love the low rpm burble of the exhaust, especially when it's coming down from on high...I think the exhaust note gets more generic and bland as you get up over 3000 rpm. It sounds more exotic at low rpms IMHO.

Everyone I know thinks my car sounds like a high powered sports car. Your thread sounds like you may have bought the wrong car.

Thanks for the input. It's not so much the exhaust. Nor is there a problem at higher revs. It's the sitting at the stop light idle where you're just listening to the engine noise. I hear truck.

Think I'm going to have to go to one of these California get-togethers and listen to how other Zs sound.

If you're into modding there will probably be more and more choices available to get the sound more where you'd like it. It would be interesting to get a bystanders perspective of it if you hook up with some fellow Zs. Sounds like a good idea.

I love the low speed growl of the Z, at rest or on the move. Truck? The only idea I can think of is a small block chevy, an old small block, like a 283c.i. on my 59 Impala. I can't id the exhaust w/ a truck, its too musical. How many trucks have you owned that sounded like the Z?

When I had only 2-300 miles on it, I would leave it in full auto and listen to the low speed rumble as the 5AT shifted slowly, but with a low speed growl with my window open. Someday, I may want a louder, in-your-face exhaust, but not now. I'm still in love.
