ok what i did was merge a few of these into this thread. then i recreated the charting the changes thread as an official info only thread that i will add to when needed.
im leaving the next gen Z thread alone for now since this really isnt the next Z

But.....I can already imagine how many Z owners are actually thinking
to trade their old Z to this new '07s.... so that they can run around and
say, 'Hey! I got this new HR engine and it's far more superior than previous Zs!!! Old Zs are just trashhhhhhhh HR Revolution!!!!!!!!!!'
..just like what they did in '06. = CRAZY.

im interested to see how the dual intake works!
i got a scenario i wanna run by you guys.
the press release says available january 2007. Usually the M.O. is to release the next model year Z around early fall . so this makes for a shorter model year. does this mean anything?
is it possible the 2007 is a "test" for the HR engine and a next gen may be introduced as early as spring of 2008? or the opposite with the new engine does this Z have a longer life and the next Z furthur off maybe 2009?
personally i was suprised with this move. my guess was that they might not but a new engine into a car at the end of its life cycle. i thought they would hold out until next gen. so now im not really getting a good read on the direction they are going.
remember the TMS is in october of 2007 where the production GT-R will be unveiled. could we see a G coupe and Z there aswell?
since we now know the VQ35HR is going in this year's Z do you guys expect it to stay around for the next gen aswell. is this the death of the 3.7rumours?
ok thats all that came to my mind right now after reading the news
any thoughts, opinions?

I think the 35th edition came out a couple months later than the non rev up motor so i don't think that releasing the z in jan means a shorter model year and release of the next generation z soon. I think by releasing a new motor nissan is saying this new motor will keep the z still exciting and new and extend the life of the current z by several more years.

i guess there isnt really anyway to know if it will carry over to the next gen. but it is nissans backbone. i guess we need to see some output #'s first.

hmm. thats a good question. the wording makes me think this is a replacement for the current VQ.
but with that said there is always the MT vs AT issuse. right now its anybody's guess

power on the G sedan is expected to be 306hp/268lbft
so on the Z, maybe 310/270 will be the numbers.
that might not sound by much, but this is under the new SAE std, so the output is probably 20hp more than the revup engine.
as far as tunability goes, lets hope with the improved airflow and variable timing we can get more power from this engine.
on the FI side, im no expert but it seems like the higher compression is not a good thing. on the other hand, the block itself is stronger. those boosting to big power levels lower the compression ratio anyway, so combining that with the better breathing, those doing internal work should be able to get more power out of this engine with less boost and more safety.
on the balance, this is a nice step forward. the fact that its going into the essentially-current Z suggests that this engine will be swapable, a very good thing for enthusiasts. on a relative basis, this engine might be the trick people needed to pass the 300whp mark. indeed i expect it to do 260whp, given the info we have. that means that with weight relatively unchanged, the Z is just shy of E46 M3 acceleration and probably on par with the 335i. with an intake/exhaust/chip the Z would likely outaccelerate the E46 M3/335i, and finally the Z would be a step ahead of a lot of cars stock.
