There is a reserve. When the needle and the digital guage both read empty, there is still about 3 gallons left. This is to help prevent someone from running out of fuel. I usually fill mine up when there is about a 1/4 tank left. I get about 20-22ish mpg with about 60/40 city/highway driving.

I'd say 40 miles after the "---" and you're pushing your luck.

I would think 5th gear kicks in around 55+ mph.

wow i would be scared to run with it at --. is it really bad to drive with such little gas? i heard before it was because your injectors would then get a lot of debris that sits on the bottom of the tank in them and clog them

everytime you turn/brake/accelerate you move the gas around in your tank. So there's no such thing as "stale" gas. Also having any form of "debris" in your tank is definitely not normal.

Umm? 31? Is this on a manual or auto? If it's a 5AT Z, I find that hard to believe... unless you were maybe averaging 50 mph.

Even on my former 02 Maxima 4AT (was EPA rated 20/26, instead of 19/26 on my 04 5AT 350Z; same engine but only 255 hp), I never got above 28-29 mpg calculated (not going by the trip computer, which was 2-4 mpg too high).

On my 04 5AT Z, w/my current commute (about 8 mins city combined w/expressway [45 mph] + ~18 mins highway at 65-75 mph + <3 mins city one way), I'm getting about 21-23 mpg per my calculations. The trip computer is usually 0-1 mpg off, so it's WAY more accurate than my Maxima's.

I take it over 3000 rpm's maybe once a day.
The mpg should be fairly normal, depending on how heavy the traffic is on your city driving. I sometimes fail to appreciate just how much stop&go kills the mileage (+ A/C). And no matter how empty my fuel guage looks, I've never filled up even close to 20 gallons...prolly 15-16.

+1 on that.

22.5 in normal driving 50% city and 50% highway.

19.0 in all city driving.

26.5 in highway driving between 70 and 75 mph depending on how many slow downs.

Best is 29mpg at 70mph on a trip with no real slow downs along the way.

I have the 5AT
