I've driven both the 04 ZR and the Z4 3.0 recently. The Z4 owns on build quality fit and finish. Had better pedal placement for heel/toe, a lighter clutch pedal and a smoother shifter, but felt down on usable torque next to the ZR even with it's weight advantage. The steering on the Z4 felt more numb...then I realized it was riding on runflats.

BMWs are solid cars and was holding up to abuse better than the ZR as well since both my friends that own them are leasing and do minimum maintenance. Not a surprise there either.

It was also a smoother and easier to drive car in general so I can see it winning many comparisons against the ZR as that is what many general automotive journalists really care about.

Only the Z4 3.0i mathes up with the 350zr price wise and its only got a 215 HP engine compared to the 350zr 287 HP

Now the Z4 3.0si has 255 HP and it beats the 350z on performance #'s but its $8k more....

For the price you can't beat the 350zr... What gets me about magazines is there always comparing the upscale models to the ZR instead of the models that are priced the same as the ZR, for example they always compare the Porsche Boxster S and the BMW Z4 3.0si to the ZR instead of the regular versions that cost the same as the ZR....

take that extra $8k-$15k that the magazines ignore and you can put a TT on ur ZR and blow the competition away.
