KnightRider79, I have seen the web page that guy set up on the motorcycle break-ins your talking about. Hes got pics and everything.

I bought my 2005 Z new late in july 2005. I didnt use nissans break in period. I followed the web site guys break in on motorcycles. It basicaly says run it hard in sets of RPM bands. EXP: 5 sets of hard run till 3500, 5 sets of hard run to 4500, etc. etc.

Ill try to find it and post the link.

Then why do the Nissan engineers even put their recommendations in the owners manual?

So if something goes wrong with the engine, they can blame you for not breaking it in correctly. My uncle and dad are both engine machinists, and they also think break in on modern cars doesnt do much. We built a 400 small block for our 72 camaro, and that one we actually broke in, and after the 1st oil change there were a bunch of shavings. I honestly dont know, youre going to here different opinions from everyone regarding break in.

Much of the material in Owner's Manuals is written by lawyers, not engineers.

They never offered any solutions before the 5th visit. They kept telling me to come back and they'll check it. This is even when I was losing 1 quart in 800 miles. That's one reason why I asked for buyback and filed for arbitration, because neither the dealer or Nissan NA had offered a resolution in 1.5 months and 4 visits. And every visit to the dealer it was blaringly obvious the car was losing a large quantity of oil.
Nobody at the dealer or Nissan took ownership of the problem and we decided that wasn't acceptable to keep screwing around.

Even if a dealer offers engine replacement in one of the first couple visits you aren't "required" to accept that offer. At least in WA the law states that the repair has to be acceptable to the consumer, i.e. can't decrease the value or reliability of the car. Putting a non matched engine in there will seriously decrease the value. Therefore that option would not be acceptable to me. I didn't buy a brand new car so they could monkey around putting a new engine in there and not have vins match. Not only would it take the hit from now being a used car but also another hit from what could be considered a "rebuilt" vehicle.
I personally would not buy a car that had an engine or other major parts replaced.
