350Z or Boxter S/ Cayman S
I parked next to a new Boxter S today at work. It looked pretty beefy, so I looked it up to see what they are all about these days. The Boxter S/ Cayman S now come with a 3.4L 295 hp engine. I wonder how either of those compare to the Z besides their $55,500 price tag?

I like the cayman a lot... With 295 hp, MR layout, and a drop dead gorgeous exterior, I'd push it in a heartbeat.
As for a comparo with the 350? probably close to the same in a straight line, with the porsche outbreaking and outhandling the Z.

Yeah because horsepower is everything right?
A 997 C2 has 325hp, yes. But I'd like to see how well a stock Z could keep up with that thing on the track.
Why does everyone just look at the power output of the engine?

Very true about only looking at hp... I recently watched a Viper Chase video posted by one of the members here. He was racing a Viper with his heavily modded Z on a closed track. The Viper obviously walked away fast in the straights, but the Z was right back on his @ss in the turns... Then out of nowhere this 911 (at least I think is was a 911) passed the whole pack never to be caught up to again. The porsche was just gone!! I was impressed.

When I was buying my z I test drove a boxster and the engine was sooooo smooth but overall I felt it lacked *****. I suspect the Boxster S would be a more compelling ride but I felt cramped because of the blindspots. Verts aren't for me though.
The Cayman S is sweeeeet...although I agree that the price is inflated a bit until they get through a few model years.

Porsche's are a little overpriced for the performance level. Part of what you're paying for is the crest. But that aside, they are sexy as hell, and a lot more luxurious than a Z. Plus, you get the braking benefit of a rear engined setup.

One thing to consider is the engine layout. A mid-engine layout, such as the Cayman, results in lower drivetrain loss then a comparable front engine design. It also provides a very balanced weight distribution between the front and the back of the car... so much that Porsche decided not to beef the engine up on the Cayman, as it would have easily smoked the base 911 on a track.
