Default Why the craze over Carbon Fiber??

I'm curious & this will probably offend a lot of people but really now....

CF (IMO) looks really cheap, lets say were talking about a CF hood, looks like someone plastered on some weird wallpaper around it, I personaly think CF looks cheap & ugly. I've seen notebooks in wal-mart that had a design very close to CF on the front.... I just dont get it?

It's a matter of taste. I think it looks great on some colors and not so good on others. It also has to be done right.

No because that is dry carbon and REAL carbon.

A lot of times what we buy for our cars is cheap junk and bad weaves. Wet carbon (clearcoated--like seibon hoods, seibon trunks, seibon fenders, etc.) is a look that I am not fond of either. Those days are over!

Everyone always argues "yeah cf saves weight, blah blah blah" and then they slap a wet carbon hood on their z. I bet you saved a whopping pound or two, nothing more. Our hoods are very light for being stock as is. If you want to argue weight savings, try a real dry carbon hood

Dry carbon is just plain sexy too

Not just chrome rims (Not my taste but too each their own). They're chrome plated 18" stockers.

Carbon Fiber is used primarily for it's substantial light-weight applications. It has a density roughly 22% of steel but 2.5 times more tensile strength...which equates to a huge weight savings.

Most generally purchased CF auto parts are wet CF which is basically CF clothed draped over fiberglass and bonded with epoxy. This type does not carry the same strength or weight savings characteristics of dry CF, and is used more for an aesthetic purpose.

There is nothing wrong with chrome rims...it is just a finish. Just because wheels are chrome does not mean they are heavy. It all depends on the underlying material that the wheel was made from such as aluminum. And also how the wheels are made. Obviously cast wheels are going to be a lot heavier than something that is forged.

Any aesthetic coloring to the outside typically does not make too much weight difference. Wheel finishings are done not only to make the wheel look more pleasing but also to protect the underlying metal from corrosion.

If you want to play the weight card, why even have your wheels painted, powdercoated, chrome plated, nicke plated, etc? Just leave it bare metal, saves weight

IDK i think it came with the whole craze when the RSX came out and the gods that drove it said "JDM tight yo!!" and started putting CF on their cars so now everyone wants to be like a god. The question is do you?
