Navigation system?
Hi this may be a stupid question but I need to know. How do the navigation system work? You pay $2000 extra for this thing, but do you have to pay monthly for it to work since its satelite opperated right. If you do have to pay monthly, how much is the monthly charge? For those of you who has it, is it worth it?
Thank you.
Thank you.
It works off of GPS technology that is free. Same concept as hand held GPS devices. I think it is very much worth the money but do a search since you can buy some very nice aftermarket NAV systems that will also play DVD movies, and games.
If you buy aftermarket that is fine for the '03 models since the compartment with the swing up door also slides inside the dash. On the '04 models the door doesn't slide inside the dash, at least not for the ones with no NAV option. I don't know if it slides into the dash if you get '04 with NAV. Point is I would be very annoyed with an aftermarket Nav and a door that does not slide inside the dash, it's a soar thumb sticking out. I love my factory NAV in my '03.
Here is a little thread about how you can mod a factory nav screen to play movies and stuff. Something I might wanna do in the future.

How do the GPS technology work? I was also wondering how does the 350Z's Nav. system compare to the after market ones. Is there a better aftermarket one, that can play DVD also.

How does GPS work? The Nissan factory Nav is DVD ROM based. All the maps are supplied via a DVD drive with the supplied disc. After that the system simply communicates with GPS satalites, which is free, to find your exact coordinates, and it is very accurate. It all interfaces together to privide you with a constantly updating map on your screen and a arrow figure which is you wherever you are. Of coarse you can enter addresses to tell it where you want to go and it WILL get you there. It does alot of other things to.

Man, thanx for all the info. I love this forum too. I've just been dooing my research on this car but have not the money to purchase the car yet. Ever since the 350z came out, I new that this is gonna be my next car and my first "New Car". The only thing that scares me is all the problem I'm reading about the transmission problem, paint problem, tire feather problem, window streaks problem, and the Bose system sucks. Thats alot of things wrong with a new car. My main concerns would be the transmission problem. I still want to get one anyway!

i had the same concerns about the 350...but i went ahead and bought one a few weeks ago anyway. i wouldnt trade it for anything. i have the window streaks, but everything else is fine. the streaks arent that big of a deal.....i plan on taking it to the dealership to get fixed one day when i have nothing else to do. simply put=the car is amazing.

I know this is a stupid question, but I'll ask anyways...
Does anybody know if it is possible to get the stock navigation installed on my 03 Enthusiast? I know Nissan doesn't even offer the nav system on the Enthusiast, but I can't imagine it being too much trouble for them to order and install it for me - especially if I'm paying $2000+ for it. Anybody have any ideas?

you cant install the stock nav aftermarket.
It doesnt matter as IMO the stock NAV sucks compared to the alpine nav I have in my Z. I know b/c we have a fx35/tech as well.
The stock nav integrates reminders for oil changes and such - but is less intuitive, slower, and harder to use. Also the alpine lets you add a backup cam, 2 other video sources and can be programmed while moving.
Th ecoolest thing the stock nav lacks that the alpine has is the "todays plan" mode. Enter 10 locations and the nav plots a route based on closest routing distance...PERFECT for house shopping!

Which Alpine do you have and can you email me pictures? How is the fit and finish of the Alpine unit. Roughly how much did you pay? Alpine has a fairly good reputation for their products, so I am very interested in your installation and pricing.
my email is andrew_netplus@yahoo.com
Thanks

Im at work now, and am going to san filipe, mexico this weekend.
However, my nav is the nve82a which is a 2002 model dvd rom nav. the companion tme-760 video monitor is a 6.3" screen which fits PERFECTLY in the stock nav bin. The combination of the two can be had for aprox $1800 from your avg. electronics online retailer.
