Two critical issues to be considered before attempting any HR swap:

1) The mechanical components from an HR are quite different from a DE. It's far from simply swapping engines and a harness, you really need the entire front clip from an '07-08 Z to get all the parts you need. And even then, it's hard to get the ECM/engine combo to work properly due to:

2) The differences in electronic systems between a Z equipped with a DE and one that came with an HR. It's a huge undertaking and one with no simple answers. We detailed an HR swap last year with the Nissan Sport Project 350Z T2 racecar and have continued an extensive discussion on the subject here:

Oh no, I wasn't talking about just switching the engine. I was talking about trading your DE Z in for an HR.

not enough of a performance diff to justify the switch...especially since some of us have their Z's paid off...my switch will come from going 370z or better

I didn't trade up or anything, but a few years after getting rid of my '03 DB Z, I bought another new one in '07 just because I missed it so much. Both are great cars and have just as much potential in my opinion.

I've been debating this switch, but don't have the heart to start from scratch on a new z.

I got a pre-order '03 Touring 6mt in August '02 and replaced it with an '07 Touring 6mt in June '07 due to the '03 being totalled. I think the '07 is a better car in all ways. all the new car bugs are gone and I think the power is better.

man, if you are going to switch from a DE to an HR, you might as well just go from 350 to 370 just to get a bigger performance out of it. Now if you can't stand the 370 and prefer a 350, then yes, I guess the switch to DE to an HR might be worth while. I think ssawa's case is a perfect example of a worthy upgrade since his '03 got totalled, so replacing with a better car only makes logical sense.

Traded my 03 for an 08. The difference is not that noticeable but the revvier-than-DE engine is nice.

The DE has a better stock engine note but maybe that's just me. Other than that, the HR is incrementally better than the DE.

Same here. I went from a 03 G coupe to a 07 HR and I'm loving it so far . Now I understand why there are so many HR nuthuggers on this site

The only reason why I didnt go with the 370z is because I wanted to go NA with the car and changing cams on the 370z is a nono.

I have both DE and HR 6 speeds.

I like the HR. I can feel the difference when I switch between cars.

But, My roadster is happy with the DE auto.

Just upgraded my wife's 04' Roadster to an 07'. . . literally 10 minutes ago. However, I would not swap my 03' Coupe track toy for an HR at this point. I have driven an HR on the track and it was sweet, but my car is too set up to start over.

If the Z wasn't my second car, i'd have an HR or VHR just for the potiential.

I love my 03 no doubt, just so fun to drive.
