A week ago my tire pressure light came on, and I scrolled through the menu to find the right rear was the cause. Last night I scrolled through the menu again and noticed that I had three sensors not working. My mechanic thinks this is probably batteries, but I think it's unusual for three batteries to finally go bad all in the same week.

Your thoughts?

I should have said that tire pressures are all good. 35 - 36psi

If the psi is all good, those tpms batteries have a limited lifespan. If all the sensors were installed at the same time, it makes sense all the batteries are dying around the same time.

If you get new sensors installed, the tire shop will probably register them for you, but if not, there's a write up on here. It's pretty easy. I've done it a few times since I drop off my tires and wheels as a loose set because I don't trust monkeys with an air wrench.

So today I'm back to just the right rear. The other three are fine.

No, they're not. As they get weak, they'll go in and out. Just do all 4. They're all likely the same age.

Average lifespan of OE TPMS sensors is about 8 years, maybe 10. Last 350Z made was 14 years ago (assuming OE wheels) so if original sensors, you're ahead of the game. But TPMS sensors always seem to have what I call "sympathetic failure syndrome". Like cam sensors, one goes, the other is likely to follow so change both or all in your case. Or just let it be and check tires manually and regularly.

 

I'm changing all four. Got em off ebay, hope they will work.

That's fine but if they don't work, you're in for programming a second time (at least no dismount) and the tire shop won't do it for nothing, unlike going to the shop, paying the $30 more for the set and if they fritz, they'll reprogram without hesitation. You bring in aftermarket, not so much.

OEM replacement for your '06 is P/N 40700-CD001.

You might be fine getting them of fleabay, or they may have sat on the shelf for a long time and have limited battery power left.

Which ones did you get?

Carfix quoted me $450 for four new sensors installed, programmed, rebalance tires.

They also quoted me $160 for the same with me supplying my own sensors, which I've already bought off Amazon and will be here in a couple of days for $55. Reviews on Amazon say they are good, program up just fine.

None of my tires have ever outlived the TPMS batteries. I usually drop off a set of 4 new sensors whenever I drop off the wheels and fresh tires. I've gotten them off Amazon and fleabay with good luck so far as long as the mhz and part numbers match up.

So, that's what I do. Pretty similar to what you're contemplating other than changing the sensors now without new tires.

 

Good call on replacing all 4 units. I tried doing 1 at a time years ago thinking it was a fluke issue. It was a painful experience I never wish to repeat (replace one, then weeks go by and light comes back on for a different corner). I held off on doing all 4 simply because I wanted OEM sensors which are close to $100 a piece. TPMS on the Z has been irritating for me to say the least, even with new OEM replacements, I've had issues with them randomly dropping registration with the antennae module. I went full nuclear and picked up an Autel TS501 in case this ever happens again. The manual relearn procedure works, but it's a hassle if you need to do it every few months.

So far so good though, haven't had the TPMS light come back on since the last relearn (6+ months back).

Well, in that case, I'd go with your solution - bring the sensors in, have it done - as that's a huge price differential! Never mind what I said earlier then. You could do the whole job almost twice over for that price diff.
