Heard some weird noises after spirited driving:
Little *Poots* while idiling, not really engine knock, but almost like small backfiring. This happened after driving for maybe 30+ Minutes, redline a couple times (at 1800+ miles now). Is this normal? Is this a bad sign of things to come? The car drives, accelerates etc. great, and didn't notice any problems this morning while driving, idling....

I've had this problem as well, after "spirited" driving. It doesn't seem to go away, though. It's also not in any kind of pattern.

Is it like a gurgling sound? My old VR-4 did that and it was totally normal. Of course, it wasn't very loud, just an oscillation in the exhaust rumble. Its tough to explain without hearing it. Can you describe the sound a bit more?
PS - The VR-4 is a turbo car, so they run a little rich and that's the best explanation for why there was a bit of gurgling sound in the exhaust. Not all the fuel was being burned completely up, so there were mini backfires (I guess you could call them that). I don't know enough about the Z's fuel mapping, but the VR-4 ran a tad rich to avoid detonation.

That's pretty much what it is, mini backfires, it will be idiling and just *POOT*.........*POOT*. Really only happens after I push the car hard, and as soon as I start driving again, there are no problems, so it prob. is running rich, part of the reason gas milage is so low. Funny side note, I had like 26-32dte and I started racing this 330I (dusted him Of Course) and I look down at the stop light and it was at 4DTE!!! I WAS LIKE OH ****! But I started driving normal and within a mile shot back to 22DTE, good for a scare though.

Here's the fix:
Make a service appointment with your trusted dealership. Have the technician there call Nissan's Tech line, and the engineers will walk the technician through the problem. They are very aware of this problem, and know exactly what to do to fix it. No word yet on what the problem actually is, though, but when I find out, I'll post it.
My inquiry to Nissan for this exact problem was resolved today. I go in at 9:30am on Monday to have it fixed.
LA-Z - Check your PM.

I remember a post a while ago saying that the ECU was programmed to run rich the first 2000 miles, no official comment on this though.

If it was simply small backfires form running a tad rich you would be more prone to hear it as you lift off the throttle after a good solid shove on the gas. At idle there should be no extra fuel in the system as the injectors are barely putting any fuel in, any Nissan designed richness would seem more likely to kick in further up the rev band. I'd ask a dealer. My SC'd Audi runs a good deal rich by design and I get nice crisp pops whenever I lift after running the car hard but have never heard anything at idle and with my 2.75" cat back SuperSprint it would be tough to miss.

Is this the same?
I notice that my Z idles a little bit rough now that I've got a few miles on it (~1400).
I seem to remember not even a hint of little misses when I first got it, but now I can watch the tach bob a little bit up and down at idle...
Anyone else got this? It's still running fine otherwise.
Maybe I'm having the poot poot sound but just wasn't listening close enough! heheh

Hey guys...
I too noticed what has been described in this thread, rough idle and poot poots. The rough idle I notice when coming home and parking in the garage, sitting in Neutural. I wouldnt say it was after SPIRITED driving, but rather normal driving. Seems to do it more when just pulling in. As time goes on... say 5 mins, it starts to lessen. As for the Poot Poot sounds, those are also heard while standing behind the Z, again after getting home and pulling in the garage. I beleive the poot poot sounds and the rough idleing heard in the car are linked... and occur simultaneously.
I only have 84 miles on the Z and I am thinking of going with one of those grounding kits to see if that helps. Maybe this is just how this car is tuned??... Me being new to a "REAL" sports car.
Thanks...

I have a grounding kit installed and I still have a rough idle. The grounding kit did help with engine smoothness above 4k rpm though.
