MY Z died today (for 5 minutes)
Hey guys,
Hopefully I won't lose too much sleep over this so here it goes. My Z is 4 months old, has had zero problem, and dynoed pretty high in stock form. I installed my popcharger and the Z-treme grounding kit 2 months ago (no problems), my crank pulley last week (no problem), and my Nismo catback exhaust also last week with no problems. Well today I had my Nismo removed and my stock exhaust reinstalled. Ran the car and everything was fine. (BTW I love the sound of the stock exhaust with the popcharger-the Nismo was too loud for my taste)
An hour later I went to Jiffy-Lube and had my engine and tranny oil changed to synthetic (just reached 6000 miles). I used 5 quarts of 10W40 Mobil1 full synthetic with an M1-108 Mobil1 filter for the engine and a 50/50 mix of MTL and MT-90 for the tranny as everyone suggested. So I left all happy and took the Z for a nice rush-hour run through the streets of Manhattan. Everything was OK until I stopped at a gas station to buy some gum. I got back into my car and proceeded to start it up, but my Z would not start. I must have cranked it 5 times and nothing. I started to panick but held my self together and waited a few minutes (3 minutes to be exact). Tried it again and it finally started. Thank God.
I spent the last few hours driving the car and letting it sit for a few minute intervals trying to replicate the problem but had none luck. Its now running perfectly. BTW, the battery was not discharged or anything. As a matter fact I could hear the alternator/starter cranking.
So now I have this worry in my head. Could this just be a one-time fluke? coincidence? I don't see how the oil change would have caused a problem. Same goes for the exhaust swap.
Any thoughts?????

No disrespect, but how the hell could we possibly diagnose somethin like that? Its not anything obvious, or you would have known the answer already.
Many things could have caused it, and I believe it is just a fluke. Computers crash, why can't ECU's?

Maybe you used too much of the battery or something. When I got my car I was always just sitting in the car listening to music n stuff and also plugged in this neon rod thing without having the car started so it just uses up the battery. There was once when I couldnt start the car up and then I unplugged that neon rod and instantly the car can start again probably cuz it has a little bit more power. I try not to plug in that neon rod as often now and I haven't had a problem since. I'm not sure if this is your issue but just trying to give a little help.
Sounds like a problem I had several months back.

Then the problem just went away by itself...

This happened to me twice in one week. Went into fail safe mode where the slip light, tcs, and check engine light came on while I was moving! Engine was running but it would not go. Hit the gas and the RPM's move but no go.
First time it reset after three cycles. Dealer did a scan and found nothing. Happened three days later and had it towed to nissan on their $. So happens another Z was their with the same problem. Scanned mine and low and behold the code was there on both cars.
Answer is >>>>>>>>>>>>>>throttle body.
I have had the car for three days now and no can replicate. Opening a BBB arbitration case this weekend. I am fed up. At least 30 trips to the dealer in 24 months. Makes me sick!

Thanks for the feedback guys. Car is running perfectly now. I think I'll stop modding for a while until I can assure that the car is fine. Anyways, it occured to me that the Mobil Speedpass might have been the culprit. The manual warns against keeping the Speedpass transponder on the same keychain as your car keys cause it might interfere with the key transponder. So I'm hoping that that was it. The funny thing is that I've been using it for years even with my 03Z and had no problems.
Ezchief, I hope you get a quick resolution to your problem. I had an 03Z with all the problems (transmission, tire feathering, bad window motors, clicking in the rear axle) and after 27 visits to the dealer over the course of one year, Nissan bought the car back from me. If you need guidance filing the Lemon Law request send me a PM. My case never even made it to court. Nissan was very cooperative.
