Gas tank hard to fill
I have a 2005 ZR touring redline. I bought the car in April and have had trouble filling the gas tank since day 1. I would put the nozzle in the tank and it would pump about one time and the gas would gush back out. After about 3-4 gallons, the tank would fill normally. I read some other posts about turning the nozzle upside to fix the problem, but nothing worked for me. I found a service bulletin about a defective shutter valve in the tank and I got it fixed today. I filled up with gas and had no problems. I just wanted to share this with anyone else who might be having the same problem.

What did they have to do to fix the shutter valve? From reading the bulletin, it looks like they have to take a lot of stuff apart and that worries me.
I had a problem a couple weeks ago - started to fill the tank and the nozzle jumped back out, sprayed gasoline all over me. I think the shutter valve must not have been completely open and I didn't notice it, was just going on habit instead of paying attention.
Anyway, gasoline sprayed all over my legs and skirt and splashed on my face before I managed to shut it off. Very scary, as you can imagine. I had some red marks on my face for a few days before it healed up.
We were out of town so I didn't want to take it to some random garage. Haven't had any problems since then but you better believe I have been VERY careful to make sure the shutter valve is open and the nozzle is fully inserted before filling up.
I looked for my VIN number on the recall list and it wasn't on it. If your number is not on the list but you still have the problem, will they still fix it under warranty?

There wasn't a recall on the valve. The tech's told me some fuel hoses had been recalled, but not on the 2005's. The work order said the shutter valve "had an internal failure" and it took about 3 hours to fix.
I had problems filling the tank regardless of how far I inserted the nozzle into the tank. I tried everyway possible to put gas in the car and it always splashed back out. I even tried 4 different gas stations and it happened everytime I filled up.
Hope this helps!

I have a pre-owned 2004 ZR and have filled it 5 times since I bought it on July 1st. I had this problem for the first time this last fill-up. I had about 87 miles dte. I got about 4 gallons in it before the pump quit (this was at a Chevron station). I drove around and went to a Unocal station and had no problems filling up. I wonder if the intermittent issue is the car or dependent on the pump.

Do you guys hold on to the nozzle while you pump? This could be the cause
I always just put it in, pull the trigger, then flip up the lock lever and let go while it fills up.. Have never had a problem yet..

I usually hold on to the nozzle, like I've been doing for the past 30 years or so. That one time a few weeks back when the gas spewed all over was the only time I've ever had a problem.
Have to think it was the car. Very slight possibility it was a problem with the pump.
No problems since then, but the incident has made me very, very cautious when filling up.

This is not an uncommon problem. It happened repeatedly on my '05 Roadster. When I first took it to the dealer they couldn't diagnose a problem. I adjusted how I inserted the nozzle into the tank and had few problems after that. Later a TSB was issued and the dealer fixed under warranty. I don't recall now the name of the part.

This is a common problem. I have taken my '04 roadster in to the dealer and they have ordered the part. You can read the TSB here:

All TSB's (Technical Service Bulletin) are available on this site. My car has had most of them. I don't care. I love my roadster!

My shutter valve repair was covered under warranty. I read the other posts about how to hold the nozzle and whether or not to use the trigger lock. I tried everything and nothing worked. Now I can fill the tank easily.

Had the same problem with my 2004 Roadster. The dealer took care of it under warranty and evrything has been fine since. The dealer mentioned that Nissan said it should take about 30 minutes to repair. The reality was several hours and a few sliced up mechanic hands.

Yeah, the TSB specifically says to put rubber guards and such on the sharp edges.
Whatcha bet the service techs don't read the whole thing through until there's blood on their hands.

The 2003 was recalled earlier this year (June if I remember right) for the fuel filler hose. Evidently it has the potential to crack. I had the recall done last month on my 03 Z. I have also had an issue (Once) where the car would take gas to about 3/4 of a tank, and then"refuse" more gas. My wife said that her 2004 Altima (3.5se) has done the same thing to her twice. If you have a 2003 and haven't had the fuel filler hose changed yet, check your VIN against nissan's tech site.
