Post Gas 87 vs 91

The owner’s manual recommends the use of premium-unleaded gasoline with Octant 91. With the recent record high gas price, I wonder how many of us actually use octant 91 or just the regular octant 87 unleaded? For 8 years, I use only 87 on my 96 Maxima even the manual recommended 91. My Maxima have been running without any single problem.

And I found this article interesting

Use higher octane. Z's have above average compression ratio. 10.3 to 1.

I always use the recomended fuel. Even the article that you referenced says "Your best bet: listen to your owner’s manual." in the first paragraph.

Also, I have NEVER seen 91 anywhere, so I normally get 93.

Unhappy 87 vs. 91

Let me see if I've got this right.

You spend $38,000 - $41,000 for a beautiful "Z" Roadster then try to justify saving about .20 a gallon X 20 gal tank = $4.00.

I think you need to slide that "Z" over to someone that can afford the extra $4.00 bucks a tankful and settle on one of those hybrid Honda Civics or a Kia Sophia.

Dude.......you live in the S.F. Bay Area like me. Gas is going to be expensive. I'll loan, no... I'll give you $20.00 so you can continue to drive your "Z" like its supposed to be driven.

topdown-z, you said it.

want to whine about fuel - get a minivan

want to "drive" - pay the price and smile every time you get behind the wheel

Actually, you don't need premium on any of today's stock vehicles (except maybe any supercharged ones like the MB SLK Kompressor). The knock sensor will tune out any differences. When you go from 93 to 87, you may have a 2% power loss, which I doubt you'll notice.

I know the above is true. But, I always put 93 in the ZR's tank, even though I know that logically I don't need to. Only the best for my toys...

And oh yeah, stay away from any fuels with methanol (gasohol). The burn ratio is OK for low compression fuels (I use it in my pickup) but I wouldn't dream of putting it in my ZR. The knock sensor isn't calibrated for a different burn rate of fuel.

A little harsh on the new guy aren't ya? So he had a question. He shouldn't be torn apart.

I think he's gotten the message that we believe that premium fuel is a must

Ok dude, you buy a 30 to 38 K sports car and you're thinking about screwing up your engine with the wrong gas? High compression and high performance, use the right gas.
