abz123: I saw that you got the 7001 from another thread. Any chance you can do a write up on the installation? where to tap the power wires, where to run the RCA, lcd mounting, ...etc.
I'm thinking about doing the same setup and using a FM mod. Eventually hook it up to an alpine or pioneer nav.

Are you planning on hooking up a pioneer or alpine nav to it?

This is kind of a temporary monitor for me until an affordable vga monitor comes on the market that will fit in the navigation area without doing too many modifications.

My plans are to hook up a computer to it....I haven't tested the quality of the the video from a computer yet. I would imagine text would be a little grainy but visible since it's not VGA. Video looks excellent from this monitor though.

I was planning on using a
1) mini ITX-2699R case/motherboard/933 mhz processer low power system with a dvd drive. (this model is not out till mid to late Jan)
2) Tv tuner with FM modulator (was looking at the Boss tuner don't want wireless modulator).

I was planning to using the computer for Navigation, MP3s, DVDs, internet.
-Navigation: I have a Garmin GPS V right now that I am going to hook to the computer using a serial cable and use Microsoft Mapppoint software. Works really well on my laptop. Has all the points of interest on there...just type where you want to go and bamm. (They have a unit by Delormme that is used exclusively for computers (no display) that are only like 99 bucks..)
-MP3: probably musicmatch jukebox.
-DVD: powerdvd or equivalent
-Internet: Probably won't use very often and don't want to spend too much money so I looking at a WiFi card...maybe piggy back onto an open wireless network. Can also park in the garage and download MP3s and movies from my home computer.

I probably won't get to installing the whole system until sometime in Feb. Most of the parts won't arrive until late Jan.

As far as power, I think I might go the coward's route and use the power outlet. Power outlet can handle about 120-150 watts. This computer system takes up only about 60 watts which is great because at one point I thought I might have to run new wiring from the battery. My objective is to make as few holes as possible.

If you want to put in a Nav, you might want to go with a monitor that can do RGB.

Default 7 inch concern you should know about

I added a 7 inch Proview into the NAV area. It is held together by industrial strength two sided tape. You cannot use screws on the screen. The viewing are of the monitor fits good into the nav compartment but there are overhangs from the monitor. One main concern I faced is that the overhang blocks two insertion points for the two screws that holds the center console to the dash. Once again two sided tape is used to hold my center console to the dash. There is a little gap in this application and the center console is not being held to the dash securely. We'll see what happen in a major accident. (Knock on wood!!!)

Here is a pick of the 7001 displaying Delorme software from a laptop. I know it looks fairly legible in this picture, but believe me, it is only fairly legible.

A VGA screen is definetly what we are going to need to view computer images on the LCD screen.

Yeah I just hooked mine up. Had to put it in 640x480 mode and high contrast display. The main problem is that these programs were written for a much bigger screen.

It's usable for most of the applications. Looks like GPS is out of the question for now....I'm going to keep an eye out on a simpler GPS program with larger text...

Internet looks usable at the 'largest' text setting.
DVDs are no problem actually looks very good.
MP3 looks fine.

Oh well. It'll give me something to play with until I find a VGA LCD that will work.

Thanks for the heads up MarkyT. What model? What's the dimensions of that LCD? Is it a VGA monitor?
