Replaced Head Unit (WOW)
I'm now a believer. I knew the Bose system sounded crappy, after finally replacing just the head unit (Kenwood K5028), HOLLY CRAP, what a difference.
Thanks to all you guys that help.
During replacement the Check Engine Light came on, any help with resetting it.
I'm going to look at other threads.

Give it a couple of days and it should go away! I had the problem along with some others that have posted lately. I suspect it has something to do with disconnecting the harness to the HU and brake.

Glad to hear it guys. I just recently bought Infinity Components, Infinity Coaxils, Phoenix Gold ZX475, Alpine DVA-9860, Farenheit screen, Image Dynamics ID8s, Memphis 1000D. I already have the memphis and Image dynamics installed. Just waiting on my alarm to go in before I throw the rest of it in the car. Looks like I have alot to look forward to. Congrats!

The difference in sound quality is like night & day.
I can't believe I waited 2 years to replace it...
I will confirm, Kenwood MP5028, it does sound 100 times better than the Bose Head Unit but changing the speakers and Bose amp will make it even better. I.e. I still have the volume flux issues, not that bad though. I think my next step is to remove the sub and the bose amp.

Yeah, I ordered it from Crutchfield and they sent me everything, harness and adpater to fit in 350z. Get this, they even sent instructions on how to replace the speakers even though I did not order any.
I will admit though, it does sound a 100% better with just replacing the receiver. But my next step is to get rid of the Bose amp. It still does some funky sound adjusting to the stock speakers.
No rush though.

do aftermarket HUs weight less than the stock BOSE?
the BOSE is craptacular, and I've been eyeing a replacement for a while... but it'd be a bonus if ripping it out yields a weight-savings in addition to sound improvement

Maybe a dumb question but any reason you couldnt just hook the HU right up to the speakers instead of gogin thru the bose amps?
You are probably right. I just spliced the harness that was sent and it works. Then I noticed, as I looked at the wiring diagram that I found here, that the Bose Head unit went to the amp and the amp to the speakers, sub and a microphone, which adjust sound levels. Not as noticable but there are times when the sound does fluctuate.
So to answer your question I probably could have bypassed the amp. As a matter of fact I may try that just by removing the wires from the amp and jumping them together. It will be a straight shot to the new receiver.
Just to add on the post about weight, Really I don't think it makes a difference.
