If you already have a DC system, a shutdown controller can help you out with turning the computer off gracefully when you turn off the car, and pushing the power button for you when you start back up.

On that note, if the shuttle's power supply is not car aware, it may have other issues. For instance, how little voltage can it run on and still keep the computer on. Most DC systems for the home expect good clean DC with little variance. In a car, when you crank the motor you can get down to 6v of available power, this may cause a standard PSU to shut down, then when you are done starting the car, it restarts. Its a computer so it will be rebooting during that time.

Another thing standard DC PSUs don't handle well is continuous low voltage, say if the computer hung while shutting down and continued to run while parked, and full speed, it will be like leaving the dome lights on and will run the battery down. A smart PSU will see you are down to say 11v and shut down the system before you end up with a flat battery.
