This could quite possibly be the most open-ended question I've read here on these forums.

1. The best sub/amp? It all depends on your tastes, types of music you listen to, where you will install them, and your budget.

2. How many subs? That all depends on the install. You could have one 10" sub installed in the perfect enclosure and it will sound way better than three 12" subs in a poorly built enclosure.

Answer these questions and then maybe we can assist you better:
a) BUDGET!!!! you need to lay out a budget for the project. You can spend as little as $200 or as much as $1000 or more.
b) What type of music do you like?
c) How loud do you listen to your music?
d) Go to stores and demo speakers (i know, not very real-world, but better than never hearing what you are buying). Or better yet, listen to some systems installed in friends' cars. Find out what sounds you like (loud, tight, etc?)
e) Are you going to change out the rest of the speakers in the future or will you be satisfied with JUST adding a sub to your factory setup (assuming everything else is still stock)?

since no monetary value has been thrown out yet, I will recommend a JL 10w7 with a JL 500/1 amp to push it. That thing will pound. The combo will run you like $800 though

i can spend up to a grand between speakers and amps. and im getting a friend of mine to do the fiberglass and electronic install. hes done a couple dashes with the sub barrels that have ended up in car magazines so i trust it.

i did go to a bunch of stores and listen, but as yall said. not very real life. listening to a sub in a sound room that 10 times the size the interior of my car really doesnt do it for me.

audio systems i know little about and im not about to get ripped off because i look like a stupid girl. not really trying to get hustled. so heres why im asking help.

i listen to a lot of different kinds of music. i dont know what sound is "loose or tight" in a sub means. i had actually said that people are telling one could be enough which was the general question. and if you had two were you happy with it?

i want to keep my spare. they are getting installed under the strut bar.

I use a single Boston G2 10" dual voice coil sub mounted inside a .75 cu ft sealed enclosure that sits under the cross member in the hatch area (zenclosures.com). Driving the sub is a Rockford Fosgate 3001. The amp's remote control **** is installed in my ash tray so I can adjust the amp's output on the fly. The whole rig cost $450. No install costs as I put it in myself. I'm not a heavy duty bass pounding person so I don't need tons of power but this setup does the job nicely.

if you are keeping spare , and trunk , the go for a strut bar box like you are leaning toward

it wil be sealed so teh bass will be tight

you can do either 1 or 2 or 3 subs

more subs , more amp power , more money

will you be happy with one ?? depends how extreme you are

try one

for a while if not happy get 2

Going with alpine i see. I have the MRD-M1005 pushing a Type-X 10" corner mounted FG box, and love it.

the type x and the pdx 1.1000 are top of the line right now. you could go with only one sub and it would still be heavy. 3kw max. not too much pushes like that.

but i love the alpine. ill redo the rest of the speakers in a few months maybe.

i had about 3k to invest but i shopped around a lot.
everyone was selling the subs for 500 a piece. just for one.
and the amp was running about 8-9 hundred.

ebay.
amp+shipping=469
2 subs+shipping=484

i saved over a grand. but a friend of mine is doing all the install and fiberglass for it, so the hookup helps a bit.

i got 2 subs just because i want the ability to be really obnoxious with it. i will hardly ever max both subs. you could definetly do only one. and to max two of them, id have to get another amplifier. but the pdx's generate a lot of power, and are one of the smallest ones on the market..so it doesnt take up too much space.
