Default WTF happened to my JL W6V2?!???

my damn sub started making some crappy noise. originally thought it was something in the trunk vibrating, but when i opened the hatch i knew it was coming from the sub. pulled the grill off (which has been installed on the sub ever since it was put in my car), and noticed that the surround was ripping from the cone.

how the hell could this happen? anyone have a similar problem with any sub?

guess i'm gonna have to see if i can get anything done with the warranty. i knew i should have just bought an xplode sub

what amp are you using?

I have been beating the hell out of my 10w6v2 for 2 years now and no problems yet. Im think you might have to many watts going to it???

woops should have included that in my op.

I am running it with a JL 500/1. the gain is turned way down. and the settings on my h/u are in the negative numbers for the sub. I don't really play it all that loud. in fact i got the w6v2 to replace a w7 since I didn't want crazy bass levels anymore.

I do play it for extended periods of time on occasion (very infrequently actually) when driving between home and school though (about 4 hours). Could that have driven the sub to failure?

oh wow, this is the THIRD sub 10w6 i ahve with this IDENTICAL problem. my freind shop has two of htem, only a few weeks old, off the same amp, moderate playing, same thing, the surround ripped at the edge of the cone all the way around...and so far, he says JL is not prepared to repair them saying over powering...

i hvae a feeling this maybe a design fault somewhere, seeing one is rare enough, seeing three could be something else...

I doubt it. I have driven my sub hard for 30 hours straight as I drove across the US. I use the same amp, but I have everything turned up.

How old is the sub? maybe just a defect?

i should have just kept the W7, that thing was a tank.

no point getting it through me, you would get murdred by the shipping, not to mention the idmax you would be underpowering with 500 watts

www.edesignaudio.com check out the 11ov.2, its a good sub to pair with the 500/1

but by all means, TRY to get warranty coverage first

you can get an idmax10 for 449 shipped.

IMO, JL's quality is no longer reflecting the price of their product. There are so many subs now that can destroy the W7 for alot less money. I'm not saying they dont make a decent product, but more people are beginning to see that there are other options out there that will leave more money in their pockets. Good luck getting it fixed.

I have to ask, since everyone loves to knock JL, what other subs will destroy a W7 for alot less money, or even alittle? I'm not defending JL, I just want to know what these products are.

i wasnt knocking JL at all, just what i physically saw and i respect JL a lot, up and down their line, they make quality products. With their name, they do, in myopinion, charge a bit more than the compeition, as they rightly should.

as far as your question goes...i am not what you mean by destroy?

but i can name a few subs that matches the JL in terms of performance, either better SQ at very very slightly less output, or more output with similar SQ...and costs from a little to a lot less money than a w7

my favorite among those is the IDMAX, IMO better sounding than a w7, with very similar output, and smaller box requirements, not to mention easier to mount

there are a lot of others, from lesser known brands...

this is the case with all of car audio acutally, most of the better known brands, you can find similar if not better performing stuff for less from lesser known names

Thanks 16psi, I have heard only good things about the IDMAX. It's seems to be regarded as a very nice sounding sub. I was thinking of getting a pair of
10W6s to replace my 2 10W3s (not that thrilled with) but these stories are making me cautious. I only used the word "destroy" because of the comment by 702fairlady.
