I finally got mine to work. Thanks to Duke, Nazar and God Himself.
Drop your images (480x232) and the convert file on your thumbdrive. No folder like Duke said.
Hold down Function and Eject, then hit reset (pinhole on left).
When power light comes on, let go of the F and E buttons.
HIt OEM image, pick your image and hit OK. After picking your image, the unit should just stare at you for a bit while it is converting the image.
After it's done, arrow back to the screen that has the Kenwood and OEM image buttons. At this point, hit the reset again.
You should be good to go at this point.
I had gotten so close to getting this to work four months ago, but the convert file that I downloaded was garbage. Plus, some of the instructions were bogus, including the ones from Kenwood.

bumping this thread from the past because I have a problem....
I had to jump start my Z yesterday, now the bottom lights light up blue, but I get no sound or picture on the screen. What do I have to do?
Never mind... Just needed to reset it and its good to go. Also the kenwood rep I spoke with talked me through how to change the wall papers. A+ service is the reason this is the third time I've bought a kenwood.

My main issue is the blue lighting. I would love to keep the amber and red theme throughout the car. What do you think, can anything be done about the blue lights at the bottom? Also, does the screen have a red menu option?
Thanks!
Thanks!

I was able to change my skin to a fire theme. I don't remember off the top of my head the exact sequence of where it is in the menu, but it can't be that hard to figure out. It's not an exact match, but it's not bad either.

I recently installed the DNX8120 on my 07 base and had a few issues that hopefully can be resolved here:
1. Can the unit play back music from NTFS formatted USB storage devices? I connected a 64Gb usb containing about 22Gb of MP3 data and the head-unit responded extremely sluggish when trying to playback and only 20-30 folders would be accessible out of 100+ in the folder.
2. The rear speakers' volume are really low, sound does come out of them but even if the output bias is set completely towards the rear they still seem too soft to be normal. Is this likely a wiring issue? or is there some type of possible cause?
Thanks in advance for any help.

A small sized USB works, i reformatted the large drive back to FAT32 and will test it out later today.

Oh I see, thanks for clearing that up. Is the 32Gb limit apply to max storage size or the actually amount of data in the drive? I slapped about 8 gigs of music on there earlier today and it played back but I noticed it will lag some what when I'm trying to navigate through the folders but all the folders were still accessible.
Thanks for the help guys.

I have a couple of questions about my DDX-712:
1) Can someone hook me up with this "convert file"?
2) Can I update the images (OEM and Wallpaper) off of my iPod (if it's in disk mode, as opposed to a thumb drive) since I don't have the USB port exposed, and it'd be annoying to take my dash apart just for that?

2) Not sure. THEDUKE could probably answer that for you.

I tried to follow a basic rule of 10 albums per folder. Its much less slugish (actually, it pretty much eliminates it) if you do this then cram all of your albums into one giant folder.
