Default Hardwiring my GPS to my car.

And im extremely annoyed.

I have a garmin gps and I was going to splice the car charger and conect it to a power supply in my car. I took off the Head unit in my car and I found the power supply line which is the yellow wire. Now when i spliced the car charger for the garmin I had 1 red and 1 black wire. I conected the + (red wire) to the yellow wire behind the head unit which is the power supply and i grounded the black wire and my garmin wont turn on. I tried multiply ways and nothing works.

can someone help me out. what do i need to connect to black and red wire to from the car charger to get this garmin to work.

please help i searched and it helped me find the power wire but search can only do so much.

thanks

It’s not working because you are connecting to the wrong power source. Connecting to a yellow power line is not what you want to do.

Your ground should be to a safe position. But, if the ground isn’t true, nothing will work.

Do not connect your GPS’s positive/power red wire to a yellow wire in your car. The car’s yellow wire has constant power so in best case (if it does power your GPS), you can expect it to drain your car’s battery. Worst case it won’t work at all since the voltage may not be correct.

You connect the GPS’s power line to an ACC switched power line (which is probably a red wire, and not to the yellow constant power line).

Keep the GPS’s power-plug intact, and connect this to an inexpensive female power plug you buy for about $2. The reason you keep the power-plug intact is that this maintains constant voltage (and probably protectively down-steps voltage from 12v to something like 9.5v for the safer and successful operation of the GPS device).

This is a simple diagram that shows the wiring.

You must disconnect your car’s battery (disconnect the battery’s ground) when doing the wiring. If you don’t do this, you could ruin your expensive GPS device or even damage your car’s electrical system.

Hope this helps, but ask any more questions you might have before proceeding with this project,

Jeez... Please give a new member a break... why don't you?

Listen to Spike, this man knows his stuff. Also, go and get yourself a volt meter from somewhere like Sears. You won't have to spend more than $25.

Something else I failed to mention.

If your GPS has an inline fuse, you should keep this intact as a measure of extra protection for your expensive device.

Of course you should make the inline fuse accessible in your wiring setup so you can easily replace the fuse if it ever "blows."

And, as jekl1000 mentions, you need a voltmeter to check your installation.

I'm assuming you cut the cord of a power adaptor like this?

if you did, this is a power converter/transformer that takes your cars voltage, 12-14 volts and probably outputs 5 volts or so...

you cant just cut this wire and bypass the transformer in the cigarette adaptor, hopefully you havent fried your garmin by giving it 12+ volts...

  • input DC: 12 ~ 24V
  • Output: 5V at 1A

now go and buy a new power adaptor for your garmin and get one of these to wire into the cars 12 volts:

It is also quite common to take your male power plug and solder on a couple of new wires to hardwire it in. The power wire gets soldered to the tip of the plug and the ground gets soldered to the side.
