Default Check Engine Dillema

Ok so today I finally had this audio shop install a Pioneer AVH3100 DVD player with a relay into my 08 350z. Everything looked fine until, I turned my car on, and the Check engine(Service engine soon) light is on... I tell them this and they don't know anything of course. They bring up the ecu scanner and the guy tells me that the error is a fuel temperature level/sensor....
Anyways after driving home I also noticed that my temperature gauge was not showing any numbers, but other than that everything was fine....
Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? I have a 1 year warranty with them, but I'd rather fix the issue somehow, because I'm liking this aftermarket head unit...

^^ Somehow the shop grounded the installation so that it affects your car's instumentation. They need to fix that, and you should not pay any additional $$.

Sounds like they plugged in the A/C box (little white box behind console) while the ignition was on. This happens quite a bit around here. I am surprised that they did this, must not work on to many 350's. I am also surprised they did not clear the code for you since they plugged in the ECU scanner it just takes an extra step to clear the codes. When you say the temperature gauge, do you mean the digital display showing the air temperature or the needle gauge showing the vehicle temperature?

thanks for the quick reply By temperature gauge i am referring to the leftmost gauge on the top gauge cluster(the digital one) instead of dispalying any numerics it just sits at _ _ _ _ ICY
Now the codes that I looked up seemed to be : Fuel level sensor and Fuel temperature sensor, or something like that. I know I can just get autozone to reset it for free and whatnot, and it will not come back on, but Im kind of worried about the temperature gauge.... Im considering taking it to nissan dealership, since car is still under warranty...

The head unit works great though! Except radio stations have a lot of static, but I kind of expected that.

I had the same codes come up just last weekend while connecting a rear view camera to my HU. I was worried at first until I figured out it was just from turning the ignition on to test the camera while I still had the climate control system disconnected. I have a scangauge installed in my car so I cleared the codes and everything is fine. As for your temperature gauge issue, assuming they hooked all of the connections back up, they may have damaged a wire or circuit that leads to the gauge, as these are unplugged when installing a HU.

I bet the two are unrelated. Clear the code and move on.

Do NOT take the car to the dealership - that will not help you at all. They will NOT cover it under warranty and they will want to charge you (and probably want to put the stock unit back in).

If the car needs to go to the dealership the shop that did the installation MUST send the car and they must be the customer. If you take it to the dealer, and the dealer looks at the car, that may be enough to void the 1 year warranty the shop gave you.

The bottom line, the shop messed up your car after you paid them to work on it, it is then their responsibility to fix it. I seriously doubt it is anything serious, but it is still on them to do it.

First step... clear the codes.. see if they come back. Done exact same thing first week with my Z. Freaked a little. Cleared em.. never saw them again.

Thanks for all the input guys! I am going to get it scanned and cleared againf or the check engine issue... Now about the gauge, I am assuming they didnt connect the wire or damaged it.... all of the options on that digital gauge seem to be working fine exept for the outside temperature, so if I am correct, It should be 1 wire going from the temp sensor near the radiator, could be an easy fix, but I might just not worry about it.

Again, I seriously doubt it is anything under the hood - why would they be working in that area?

Chances are the problem lies at the gauge itself - they possibly had to remove the gauge cluster to get the radio in. Perhaps a pin backed out of the harness or maybe a harness wasn't plugged in? I would suspect areas in which they worked before I started looking in areas they didn't touch.

Sounds like they did not hook up power to the amplified antenna that our car uses. You should not get alot of static even with an aftermarket radio. What kind of shop did you go to?

i went to a tire shop today and had them clear up the check engine codes, nothing shown up since.... The digital gauge is somehow working now, which makes no sense, but I will ignore this.... As for the unbearable static, I might have to take out the unit and see if they pluggged in the antenna properly... It was a random audio/hid shop

Do you receive nothing but static, or do the stations just not come in quite as well as they did with the factory HU? If you receive nothing but static they likely didn't reconnect the antenna to the back of the head unit. If the stations just don't come in quite as well it is probably the HU itself, some HU just don't tune in stations as well as others. My JVC KW-AVX820 is better than the stock HU in every way except radio reception, it still picks up the same stations, but they are more prone to weak reception/static. Fortunately I don't listen to the radio much anyway because it is mostly a bunch of talking, commercials and crappy music.
