Default Replace everything except the Head Unit, is it possible?

So I have a 2006 with the factory Bose System. I want to de-bosify my system so that I can get rid of all the Equalizing they did. I am willing to replace everything except the head unit. Is this possible?

Priority of things to change is as follows
1) install aftermarket sub and amp. Ideally i'd like to eliminate the bose equalizing sent to the new aftermarket sub, but I suppose retain it to the original speakers. I will, however, remove the stock sub or at least disconnect it.

2) install aftermarket speakers/amp and remove the bose amp entirely thus eliminating all equalizing

If I could just get away with 1) I could probably be happy but is the second step possible?

Thanks to anyone who replies. I appreciate your time and help.

IMO, you're not doing much by keeping the headunit. I think the hu is in charge of all the equalizing not so much the speakers.

I would go ahead and replace it all with an aftermarket setup. After that, you can truly customize the sound.

I'm no audiophile and correct me if I'm wrong, but I always thought the head unit was the weakest component of our sound system. I would personally replace that first.

The signal output from the Nissan HU's, Bose or otherwise, is just crap, and nothing you install downstream is going to make it any better.

Damnit... I figured this might be the case but was hoping otherwise.

Thanks for the quick responses everyone.

You can keep the headunit, its just expensive. Get a DSP like the JBL ms-8 which strips away all factory equalizing and then re-equalizes to your specifications. or the JL cleansweep, I think the Fosgate one does it too.

If there is no compelling reason to keep the stock OEM Bose H/U, I recommend replacing this. Even an inexpensive aftermarket H/U will provide more features and better function than the stock Bose.

The HU in the Z looks like it belongs to a Versa. That's just sad.

Ah thanks for replying. I saw the JL cleansweep and was thinking it might be what I need. That is pretty pricey though just to keep the head unit... Would be much cheaper to just replace it.

The compelling reason behind keeping the headunit is I like the stock interior as it is. I'm not a fan of bright/flashy blue headunits personally and I certainly feel like it would be out of place in my Z's interior (all black with orange accents). If I could find a more conservative one that I could match the color to the orange backlight of the interior, I might consider it but I haven't had much luck finding that. Recommendations are welcome.

Again, thanks for all the replies.

You can change the color of the lighting on just about any of the better aftermarket HU's. I've got a Kenwood, and it allows just about any color change to its backlighting, so matching the OEM orange took just a minute.

You can find used DSPs on DIYMA all the time http://www.diymobileaudio.com/forum/...o-classifieds/ Check out the alpine imprint as well, (the h650 or the 701 can use aftermarket headunits if you have a line out converter) can be found for like 150 bucks. Most good head units you can change the color on. I might go with a clarion cz501 because its double din, good quality, and ive seen it in a 350z and the orange looked really good.
