Detector is circled in blue (in my previous post). It is an Escort SRX system. Got it on eBay for $680.

It has a small read-out, which I attached to the headliner above the mirror with 3M molding tape (picture is below) and a speaker, which I mounted under the dash. It also has a mute and volume control on a very small wired remote, which I mounted on the side of my console near the shifter. It is always close to my hand, and comes in handy around shopping centers and radar warning beacons.

I like that however isn't it better to have that more in your line-of-driving-site?

Maybe it seems further off than it actuall is once your in the car and such, but it could apear as if you need to 'look away' more than I would like from my path.

You are correct about the importance of having a warning system in your line-of-sight.

My unit has a voice speaker that tells you what type of threat it detects. A man's voice says "Kband" (cops) or "Xband"(usually a store door opener or fog or speed warning on a abrupt expressway off-ramp).

The display (above my mirror) has a bar graph that tells you the strength of the threat.

The system comes with a LED that you can mount anywhere. It lights up red when there is a threat. It is a very small light (led). I am considering mounting it near the digital speedometer or on the windshield pillar.

I am considering the LED since I did get a Laser Warning once where my stereo was loud, I didn't hear the warning, and since I didn't react quick enough, I got nailed (ticket).

The V1 (brand) radar detector has directional arrows that tell you where the radar threat comes from. My Escort does not. Since I usually slow down when I get a warning, I'm not sure the directional arrows would help me any.

One thing I can say is that the unit I have is very sensitive. Even though my radar detector is in the grill, it always warns me of threats that originate from behind me (as well as in front of me). I'm sure this is because the radar beams are reflected off of things in front of me and are detected by the unit (in the grill).

I have been using the 8500 for about 3 years. I like the fact that it can simultaneously detect multiple bands and multiple hits. In my estimation, I usually get 5 to 8 seconds of warning before the troopers know I'm there. Plenty of time to slow down.

I would definitely recommend the Passort 8500 radar/laser detector to anyone who is considering a detector.
