Whats the best radar detecter?
I prefer V1 by a mile. The arrows REALLY help in some scenarios.
(did I pass him yet?)
If cost is an issue the Escort would be my next choice. It has similar performance, but lacks the directional arrows.

I opted for the Escort Solo 2 cordless radar. It is great as far as I can tell. It is a bit pricy though; about $275. It also detects laser and I have witnessed this. My vote goes to Solo 2.
Obviously your not going to go wrong with the 8500 X50 or V1. Either one provide excellent coverage and each have there pros and cons. I personally have just purchased the 8500 x50 and it has already saved me, not saying that the V1 would not have, but I also have the ZR3 Shifter to help out with the laser issue.
v1 is great for highway, but if you do any city driving at all you will be muting it every 3 seconds, this is because the V1 has 2 radar (front and rear) antennas, twice the antennas, twice the false alarms. the v1 is also an aging detector, it lacks the sophticated software that allows the 8500 to filter throug all the "noise" made by the city and focus on the frequencys used by the police.
it outscored the v1 in numerous independant tests, the v1 only beat it in the X band category, which is a band that is rarely used anymore, it is extensivly used in automatic doors though. anyone say false alarm?
www.radartest.com check it out do the research, i did, i went with the 8500 and couldent be happier.

The V-1 is upgraded every year! It is by no means "aging"
It has been posted on here a million times that RADARTEST was a FIXED comparison! Cincinnatti Microwave that makes Escot basically bought and paid for that test and it is NOT valid.
In nearly every other INDEPENDENT comparison, the V-1 beats the 8500.
So yes, do the research.
That said, you cannot go wrong with either detector. Both are top of the line. The V-1 has arrows that tell you exactly WHERE the radar is coming from and these are invaluable!

as for the updates, i dont know about that. i dont own one therefore i wouldent know about updates.
yes the v1 is good, but the damn thing false alarms every 3 seconds, with enough time you can tell where the radar is with the 8500, the directions explain how . i dont know about the v1 but the 8500 can track if i am not mistaken 7 different sources at once with numerous different display modes. ranging from the actual frequency, to each individual source, with its own little graph. i personally dont feel that the v1 offers 100 dollars worth of better protection, but it does offer great protection just like the 8500.

The V1 vs. 8500 debate will go on forever and never be resolved like coke vs. pepsi.
I've had the luxury of using both units in my life.. I had a V1 back in the 90's(stolen) and now I have an 8500 x50.. They are both very good at what they do. I chose the 8500 this time because it's $100 cheaper, easily purchased at any major electronic store (making it even cheaper if you have coupons or discounts) and is well integrated with the ZR3 laser shifter..
You should really decide what's better for you because the opinions will be all over the map.

Thank goodness. I didn't want to get into it all again!
The integration with the ZR3 is a very good point though.
Oh yeah, NOBI, when I wrote out the word independent in CAPS, I wasn't trying to correct your spelling error. In fact, I didn't even notice it (I spell it with an "a" a lot too
I was just emphasizing the word.
As for the upgrades, you can send in your V-1 and they will send you the newest edition on a prorated basis when you send in your old one. You can go to their website and punch in your serial number and it tells you if you have the latest one and how much it will cost to get it if you don't.
