Footwell Lighting How-To,
#21
bump for pics being back up! If its not too much to ask could a mod move this over to the interior, exterior body and lighting section. I think its more appropriate over there.
Also if anyones interested in doing this I recommend they try to find the purple and pink wires to tap at the drivers side foot area where the fuses are. It'd be much easier to just take apart that area to run wires around instead of going all around top to bottom.

So since I'll be doing it all over again, would love to see if someone can explain how to tap those wires down there!
Thanks for the great write-up though!

You should tap the same wires on the front driver's side pillar instead of going through the light assembly. (I just noticed the pink and purple wire go down there too,) Tap from there its much easier!

Just out of curiosity, why did you go with a long tube for the light? There is a site and I believe ebay has them, but they are 4 or 5 leds in a small (3 inches or less) holder that lights up the same amout as a neon would. Just would take up about 1/4 the room. Ill try to find a link.
edit, closes thing i could find, ill post pix of what i have later.

I got the LED domes from
http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/50-3083
and they're well worth it. Quality product. Warning - required some simple dremmel modifications to the dome light fixture to get them to fit.

Just for posterity, In my '03 350z, the pink wire in the a-pillar turns into the purple wire going into the center roof map light box.
And just so you don't spend an hour like I did, both the purple and pink wires (which are one and the same) or both NEGATIVE wires, not positive.
I tapped the wires in the driver a-pillar for lights under the dash.

VOBOY, Thanks for your posting the footwell pics and directions they came in very handy. I took it one step further and also wired up the luggage area.I used VLED flay 6" LED strips, very low profile and easy to hide. VERY BRIGHT! I will post pics on my photos since I can not figure out how to post on here, keeps asking for a URL????

Just wanted to update and share my new setup. It finally got to me how messy and unclean this setup was and decided to clean it up a bit. I stopped by Radioshack one day to pick up some diodes and these caught my eye:
http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=2062570
2$ a piece plus tax, cheaper and smaller than cathodes! Had some dollar store 24 gauge stereo wire, (really really thin), already handy, I soldered some connections
drilled a hole on each foot well side and screwed it down, (led comes with nut and washer) and I was done!
finished product:
passenger
driver
driver lights off
driver/oem radio cluster comparison
I accidentally left image stabilization on when I took the pics with a tripod so they came out a bit blurry . The led's actually match very well with the stock orange interior in person, (the pictures might be overly accurate :P). Anyways, something new with the way I wired them up was, I got rid of the old schematic, (dome light, lights on when door opens). The new setup turns on when the illumination is on, (ie DRL/ headlights on). The finished product looks good, and the wiring is much more pleasing to me at least. Just wanted to give you DIY'ers some ideas w/ a nicer install.

Cool looks like I wasn't the only one that really wanted this done to my Z haha...bought a LED kit with a wired remote and I think the results came out pretty awesome...you can change the LEDs to numerous colors, or just pause them on one specific color...only thing is you just gotta make sure the mats are always clean lol...
Sorry for the blurry pics, old camera, no tripod, took them real quick for this thread

Great write-up!
I've been thinking about doing this cuz I really like the feature in other cars I've been in like Lexus.
I was wondering though, if you have side curtain airbags, can you still run the wiring down the pillar?
Also, I'll prob do white but I'm not sure if I want it as bright as the cathodes are. Is there another type light that is a little bit dimmer?
Thanks!
