The Tire DB - Posts about Track and AutoX tire brands
Looking for some quick help related to the topic covered in this thread. I am sure my answer is in here somewhere but with all the wheel sizes and offsets bouncing around I'm a bit dizzy.
I've got a track event this Saturday that I wasn't planning to take the Z (06 Touring - no suspension/brake mods) and I want to pick a set of track wheels/tires. Since Edgeracing is in Miami (I'm in West Palm Beach) I plan to order from them TODAY so I can get the wheels in time.
My preference is to stay with a 17" wheel setup for all the normal reasons mentioned previously. I need help with the following.
I'm looking at 17x9 wheels to run a 275/40. I used to run that tire/wheel width all the time with my Trans Am but have noted here the preference to run 10" wheels with that tire size. Do you have a pervasive reason why I shouldn't run 275s on the 9" wheel?
Second, with my unmodified suspension what are you thoughts on wheel offset (this is where I get real confused)? My two favorite wheels are 22 and 27.
I am not fundamentally opposed to running a narrower tire to make things fit but currently edgeracing is out of stock on the 255 Toyo RA1s.
Thanks for your help.

front and think it would look a little puny in the rear, 17x10 looks good
but i keep wondering how the handling is in tight corners or auto-x.
I like the look of the 18x9.5 all around in the enkei rpf-1 but i like the
reduced rotating mass the 17 gives and improved acceleration with
smaller diameter-helps a lot with my 5AT on the racetrack.
It would be cool if a company made a 17x9.5 wheel
demand?- i am sure that is a fortune to have done- i know i just have
not come accross a production wheel in that size in the varioius sites
i have looked in. I have browsed in the CCW website briefly because
a couple of my customers have those wheels and one of my friends does
as well but did not pay attention.

I've run 275's on 9 inch wheels and 9.5's and no problems with either.

BTW, my track setup is currently for sale since I want to move up to a wider, more aggressive 18" setup (RPF1s). I know . . . shameless plug.

Doing my 1st AX with the 350Z. My Boxster required very high pressures up front 46-48 lbs. with rears at 38-39 lbs. This helped Turn in and allowed throttle steering with the rear.
Any input from you 350 autocrossers will be appreciated...Remember I do NOT have R tires, I need street tire info.
Thanks

I started with 40 front and 30 rear, but it was too little bite in the front and too much traction in the rear and I didn't feel I could get the car to rotate.
I've been pretty happy with 38 front and 37 rear. AVON Tech M500s. Rich

As an example, my T2 350Z is on 285/30-18 Toyo R888s using nitrogen. Depending on the track and setup, cold tire pressures can vary from 28-32 lbs.
If you don't have Brembo brakes...most any wheel will fit..(within reason)
But with Brembos you must be careful. But Edge Racing is good, they can tell you what fits...that is where I buy my wheels & tires whenever possible.

Jet, the problem with nitrogen, is that you wont be able to add pressure and make adjustments at the track. You can obviously reduce pressure, but not add any pressure unless you bring your own source of nitro.
I havent used Nitrogen fills at the track, so can't really give you any useful feedback on it's rate of expansion, other than it will be less. With my regular air fills, I usually start around 31psi with Hoosiers, and that jumps to about 38psi after some hot laps.

When I'm running street tires in dry, I use 44F/40R on my Kumho ASXs.
However, I agree that DOT-R tires are addictive, but I can still have a good time on street tires (just not for as long).

hummm...with street tires, I use the shoe polish method on the sidewalls to find the right pressures (which should provide the optimal grip), then I adjust from there to augment handling characteristics (to a limited extent).
on 615's, I ran them at 40 PSI all around...but my Z was BSP, so the suspension was considerably different than OE.

As far as nitrogen pressures i would start off 3psi highter than your normal air pressures .

Enkei RPF1's can be had in 17x9.5 and 17x10's although you'd likely want a small spacer for a 9.5 with a +38 offset. 5Zigen ProRacer GN+'s come in 17x9.5 also(I own a set of these). Enkei also makes the GTC01 and RP03 in that size. GramLight 57F and 57S come in 17x9.5. These are just a few I can think of off the top of my head.

you could just add air .... the 1-2 PSI worth wouldn't be adding so much water vapor along with it to ruin things.
