Default Lightest Brakes

What is the lightest brake kit? I have the stock brakes but the Infiniti performance tire and wheel package with 18's. All I want is the lightest possible brake kit that still provides quality and durability and obviously stops better but nothing too overkill. But if overkill is what it takes to get the lightest brakes then thats what I may get.

Don't knitpick over a few ounces for a big brake kit. Just make sure it has a 2 piece rotor with an aluminum hat. All big brake kits are overkill for street use. All brakes will stop just as well the first stop. The BBK dissipate heat better and won't fade. That's the only advantage. And of course the Bling factor.

I was curious about this too... caliper weight imho is irrelevant. It's rotational mass of rotor that could make a difference.

posted about rotor weights yesterday... guess it didn't raise much interest

Well, Ive known some kits to save over 20 to 30 pounds. The one that I knew accomplished this was the ZMI Titanium Brake kit. But the only website that used to sell it has shut down, and now they are no longet available. I'll settle for 13 inch rotors and a 4 piston caliper. If anyone can tell me where to find these brakes, or the next lightest thing, then I'd really appreciate it.

wouldn't the lightest brakes be the carbon ones? That run for 10k+

I'm not interested in paying 10k, but it would still be interesting to see.

Light weight is a great benefit, but isn't THE benefit you really want with a Big Brake Kit. Big brakes give you greater heat capacity as their primary benefit. In most cases, a BBK will provide much larger components than stock, but they are made from lighter materials. For example, the stock caliper is compact, but feels like a brick when you pick it up. An aftermarket 4 piston aluminum caliper is usually around 7-9 lbs. A full out race part weighs less, but at the cost of losing streetability (no dust boots, needs frequent rebuilds, etc.). Two-piece rotors that come with BBK's are usually much larger as well, but with the aluminum hats they typically weigh the same or less than the stock part. On most of our kits, you typically save a couple of pounds per corner, and sometimes it's a wash. It's very rare that they weigh more. In order to get something extremely light, you're talking exotic (and very expensive) materials like a Porsche ceramic setup. For the average guy looking for a performance gain (who doesn't have very deep pockets), the heat capacity you gain is really where the benefit is. You can hammer the brakes on the track without losing performance over repeated laps. You don't save a ton of weight, but gaining that ability without actually adding weight is great.
For unsprung weight savings, I'd focus on lightweight wheels in particular, in a smaller diameter (17's). On the track I run Enkei RPO2J's in 17x9 at all four corners...they weigh about 17 1/2 lbs each. Compared to the stock 17's, which weigh about 26lbs each, you're looking at 8 lbs per corner. I'd guess the Inifiniti wheels you're running are in that mid to high 20lb range as well. You'll have more R compound tire choices in 17" sizes as well, and the tires and wheels are both cheaper in 18 or 19 inch sizes.
We have front and 4 wheel kits for the Z that fit under 17" wheels, and they have enough heat capacity to keep you happy on the track. The front is a 4 piston, and the rear is a lightweight 2 piston that designed initially for use on Speed World Challenge racecars:

StopTech front wheel Big Brake Upgrade for the 2004 Nissan 350Z. The kit includes ST-40 4-piston front calipers painted red, black, or silver, 7075-T6 billet aluminum caliper mounting brackets, 332x32mm slotted, floating, front AeroRotors, 7075-T6 billet aluminum AeroHats with directional standoffs, StopTech SS (DOT compliant) front brake lines, and Axxis Ultimate front brake pads. Requires 17 inch or larger wheels, however not all 17 inch wheels will fit. Please check the wheel fitment chart for your car. Options: Drilled rotors - $100 per pair; Yellow or blue paint - $200 per pair of calipers and 30 day lead time. This kit fits under the stock wheels.

I have brembos so i dont need a big brake kit. I also have 50k miles on my car so i will probably get rotors soon. I would like a 2 piece that is lighter than the stock brembo rotors. I run 19x9.5 and 19x10.5 Gram lights. They dont help me go faster but they let me look good doing it. I just cant see dropping the dough for those big brake kits. My brembos dont fade at autocross and i dont do road course.

JonathanG35,
If you aren't tracking your car, then I agree you won't need anything more than what you have. Your best bet would be a 2-piece rotor if you want to shave a few pounds. Replacement iron for them is much cheaper than the stock one-piece Nissan parts.

No-can-do...sorry!

We can't undercut our authorized resellers. If you pm me with your location, I can send you to one in your area. Or, you can check our website: http://www.stoptech.com/customer_cars/

how much less do the stoptech slotted aerorotors weigh than the stock brembo rotors?

also how much less if any do the stoptech regular slotted rotors weigh over the stock brembo rotors?

I've been thinking of doing the aerorotors up front and regular slotted rotors in the rear

ATS makes carbon disks, kinda pricy though.

This was a concern to me also when I upgraded my brakes. I went finally with the Stoptech 332mm front rotor with ST-40 caliper and 328mm rear rotor with ST-22 caliper. Been very happy with the results.

Here are some specs:

stock base front caliper: 12.5lbs stoptech front caliper: 11.5lbs
stock base rear caliper: 6.5lbs stoptech rear caliper: 6.5lbs
stock base front rotor: 16lbs stoptech front rotor: 17.5lbs
stock base rear rotor: 12lbs stoptech rear rotor: 15lbs

total weight of stock base brake system: 94lbs
total weight of brembo brake system:107lbs
total weight of Stoptech brake system:101lbs

Hope this helps. Stoptech also makes a 355mm front brake kit and a 355mm rear brake kit, but in all but the most extreme race conditions, these are overkill and add unnecessary poundage. For me, the small extra weight gain, mostly in the less important (with regrards to handling) rear system was more than offset by the serious weight reduction (10lbs per corner) afforded by my Nismo wheels.

Speedracer, do you know how much are the front and rear stock brembo rotors weight?

Calipers are more or less all the same weight(1lbs difference doesn't change anything), while rotors are unsprung, rotational mass, which is really what maters.

Wilwood(brakezone) 14"(355mm) GT(slotted) rotors are a 17.xxx lbs (a bit above 17) for front, while the rear are like 16.xxx lbs (a bit bellow 17)

don't know about the superlight calipers

Don't know the weight of the Brembo individual components. The data on the weight of the entire Brembo system was found on this forum some time ago. The Brembo rotors are still a one piece design *I think*, which could account for the few extra pounds in weight of the system.

Stock drilled fronts are 22lbs, dunno about the rears.
