Default Pesky SLIP Light

While driving my Z, I am unable to accelerate aroudn curves. The yellow SLIP light engages and will not shut off until I slow down or take my foot of the pedal. Is this common? or is this a defect? I cannot understand how FI works if you cannot acclerate around curves. Need a liitle information from here. I took it back to the dealer but they could not find anything wrong. How can I rectify this problem?

I can tell you that TCS will, under unusual circumstances, activate SLIP and virtually shut down your car. Have you recently replaced the wheels or tires? Mileage?

thats dangerous..one time i was going around a large bend at 60 mph, car was perfectly stable, i heard no tire squeal and then suddenly the slip light went off and the car lurched forward. i thought it was ready to do a 180. it oversteered so i gave it a light tap the other way and gave it gas to balance out and it straightened out.

Are the wheels actually slipping/squeeling when this happens? If so, then it's working as designed.

Are they stock sizes or did you change the stagger?

The wheels are not stock, they are Thruxton 20s. The TSC button is not activated because I never replaced when my rims got stolen. This has been happening since I bought the car from Nissan. I did not change the stagger, actually dont even know what that is. The tires were purchased with the car as a package. Was Nissan suppose to do some adjustments.

the slip light turns on because your aftermarket wheels are the incorrect stagger.

Stagger is the difference in size (outside diameter of the tires) between the front and back. The stock tires are 225/45/18 in the front and 245/45/18 in the rear, that makes the rear tires a little larger than the front.

The TCS system expects to see the front and rear wheels turning at different rates. If your stagger is different than stock (most likely outside the acceptable range), then during turns, that could trigger the TCS.

I don't believe there are any adjustments that Nissan can make for different staggers. You just have to learn to drive with TCS off.

BTW, I don't understand this statement: "The TSC button is not activated because I never replaced when my rims got stolen." Are you thinking about TPMS, the tire pressure monitoring system? Those are mounted in the wheels. They don't have anything to do with TCS though.

I took my car to the dealership when the low tire pressure light came would come on. They told me that the sensors were not there. I then learn that the TCS switch did not turn on and off. I am assuming that is what controls the TCS system. I am going to get the sensors install and see what happens. It seems that Nissan should have corrected the balance or not have sold me the tires. I also have not heard of this being a problem with any other car. That is what concerns me because they have more whp than I do.

TCS is just the traction control system, mine comes on sometimes too, i think its just cause of my diff tire sizes. its not a big deal, just press the button to turn it off.

I found the answer to my problem. Nissan found out that the alarm installer forget to recconnect the wire that controls the TCS. It still came on around the curve but did not when I turned the TCS off.

Mine does the same thing. It's only since I got my new rims. I plan on buying the unit that "remembers" your preferred TCS setting(on or off), I always forget to turn it off until I try and accelerate out of a turn and the car dies. haha

I want one of those memory units for my tcs button!!! I've been hitting that button first thing for over two years now. Maybe I should make it so the light comes on when the TCS is on instead... that way I don't have to see it all the time.

When I first put my 20 x 10 on in the rear I had the same problem. The tire they put on the car was not wide enough for the rim. I had to get a wider tire which caused the problem to stop.

It's not the width of the tire but the hight, what size tires are you running on front and back?

Front 245/35/20 : Rear 275/30/20 = Diff

Diameter F 26.75 : R 26.50 = -.25

So your back tires have a smaller diameter than your front. You need to either get a larger diameter back tire or a smaller diameter front tire.

For reference the stock is:
17" 225/235s Diameter F 25.86 : R 26.25 = +.39
18" 225/245s Diameter F 25.97 : R 26.68 = +.71

You can use this calculator to plug the numbers into http://www.discounttiredirect.com/di...foTireMath.jsp

Hope this helps

I never had this problem until I replaced my rear tires with all-weather tires. However, as my tires break-in over several thousand miles, the incidences of triggering the TCS is reduced. The stagger is the same as when I bought my car (see sig).

Tire traction would be the only variable in my case, not stagger. What tires are you running? My guess is they have soft sidewalls or just poor dry traction. Are they Kumhos or Nittos? (puts flamesuit on)

Without your tire profiles in your sig, there is no way to tell stagger but I imagine they are all 40s?

Your issue may have more to do with the new all season tires being taller than the summer tires they replaced, especially if you did not replace the fronts at the same time (you did not specify).

If the slip light is coming on without the tires actually slipping, it is a tire size issue, not a traction issue.

His complaint in the beginning of this thread was that he was getting "SLIP" while in a high speed curve but not slipping. If the tire is maintaining firm contact with the ground, than it is not a traction issue.
