Unhappy Why Cheap X-Drilled Rotors Suck

I will never buy X-drilled rotors again, or cheap off-brand ones anyway. These started cracking with less than 500 miles on them.
This is the final result after about 5K miles. That are both cracked all the way down on both sides of the vents.
While my fronts didn't cracked, they were warped and caused steering wheel shimmy when braking.

This time around, I went with Rotora slotted only. Just by visible inspection, you could tell the quality of these were much better than the previous set. Hopefully they will last longer.

Sorry for the horrible quality pics...

I'm not really sure. I bought them new off someone esle on the forum along with SS lines & pads. There was no name or other distinguishing markings on the rotors.

some folks get 'em from 'rotorworks' or something on ebay....the very same reason I won't buy cheap ones, despite folks' opinions that they're "great" quality

Did they crack after excessive track use, or daily driving?

well, I've got AP X Drilled on my car now for 2 years, numerous track days and daily use...and not a single crack

Don't buy no name junk, and you won't run into problems - slotted, drilled, solid, or otherwise. As the saying goes - garbage in, garbage out

This was after daily driving. I push the car quite hard, but no track days on these rotors.

I'm sure that not all X-drilled rotors are junk. Porsche wouldn't put them on their cars if they were... I was really making more of the same point you did "junk in = junk out".

I've seen quite few people on here asking about the cheap "eBay style" rotors. I warn them. Buy a quality name brand! Otherwise, you'll have to buy it twice, and it ends up costing more than the quality brand did in the first place.

Where is this crack in relation to the web, inside, between the faces? How far from the edge is that hole? What size hole is it?

That is a most impresive crack.

Ok, I got a couple of better pictures in the daylight. It appears thatthe outermost drill hole goes halfway through an internal rib.
This is where the failure took place on this one. Its' cracked all the way down. I used a tape measure to give more accurate sizing.

You can't beat good ol' quality plain rotors.

No holes, no slots. Just plain.

Hmmm... Interesting. I would've thought that drilling through the rib would be stronger and resist cracking better. On the other hand, the edge of the hole is less than one hole diameter from the edge. That is, 1/4" holes, but there's only 3/16" from the hole to the edge. I've been drilling hole in my rotors for years, and always stay at least 1/4" away from the edge, and put the hole right next to, but not through the rib. Mine have never cracked like this. This is good info about staying away from the edge. A nice smooth chamfer inside each may help too, by keeping the stress risers down.

Many rotors have too many holes as well. I only put 20-25 holes in each. You don't need more than that.

Thanks for the pictures!

Oh, and don't buy cheap rotors ever.

mind if I ask where you got your Stage 2 kit from (price, too) and about how much install ran you? I've been eyeing the kit for some time and am probably going to get it

Adding holes and slots decreases the thermal mass of the rotor for those of you planning on tracking your car.

I think that was the issue. This time I went with Rotora, and I could tell a huge difference in quality. I think if you stick with a good brand name, you'll be ok...

suprpwr,

I originally saw the kit on PerformanceNissanParts, but ended up going through a Canadian guy as I'm in Toronto, that ordered directly through Stoptech. I think it was around $900CDN. Keep in mind this is for the non brembo kit for the 350Z (I have a G35x which uses the same thing the instructions that came with the kit were all for the 350Z ). I got my EibachPro Kit and the brake setup installed for $200 CDN The dude that did the install was like $300 for the install, which was a great deal. I said well I only have like $240 on me, he was like ok $200.

That really sucks to hear/see. There are quite a few cheaper alternatives, and I happen to have one of them (although different from the ones pictured above). Visually, they're pretty decent quality. They're crossdrilled/slotted, and have held up to about 8 mos. or so of daily driving and also a season of AutoX on R-Comps. They've proven to be a great investment for me. With the price difference, I could another set and still spend less than a set of genuine Brembo rotors.
