Default Shocks and struts...

Hello all.

I am new to this forum. I have a 2005 Nissan 350z that now has 100,000 miles on it. The car runs pretty good as I take care of all the criticals. However, over the years the ride has gotten softer and I experience more roll in the turns these days. I am now at a point where I am considering either replacing the shocks and or struts.

My questions are:

1.) Can I solve this problem with new shocks? That seems to be the cheaper route.

2.) Is the softness in the ride due to struts? (more expinsive)

If either option is relevant and or mandatory what would be the right choice for shocks and or struts? I just want my "new car" ride back. Nothing more at this time.

Regards,

Andrew Broadfoot

Welcome to the forum.

The best solution for a tighter suspension would be sway bars. Second, i would consider Tokico D-Spec shocks in which dampening (hard or soft ride) can be adjusted (both compression and rebound simultaneously) easy as pie. This is good and cheaper solution to purchasing coilovers.

Welcome. Springs last forever. Shocks should be replaced. Bilstein offers a quality set up for $778/4. Your Z will ride like new again: http://www.tirerack.com/suspension/S...oupe&brand=all

Close to forever

Your shocks/struts have been wasted for a while now. Just replace them, look at the LCA inner bushing. Keep driving.

I'm going through the same thing.

My car is a 2004 with 67,000KM & has been feeling sloppy lately. I also have a squeak that is coming from the front end when I go over ANY bumps.

It turns out my struts in the front are gone, my ball joints are almost gone plus my compression arm bushings & lower/upper control arm bushings are worn.

So my list of things to get is:

Monroe Sensa-Trac Struts- #72251(left) $92.00
#72250(right) $92.00
Mounting Plate x2- #905985 $25.00
Monroe Sensa-Trac Shocks x2-#5795 $68.00
Lii Hau Ball Joints x2-#(none) $65.00
Compression arm Bushings x2-#54570 AC70A $58.00
Whiteline Front Bushing Set $160.00

After I do all this(just waiting for my struts/shocks & Whiteline bushings), I'm going to do my sway bars(Whiteline) & end-links(Power Grid).
Since my car is only a summer car, I will be doing my whole rear end next summer(new Quaife LSD,SPL/Whiteline bushings).
My car should be handling like new after that.

As far as shocks go, what is the difference between Koni and Bilstein shocks?

I have the Koni sport (adjustable) shocks on my Z and Bilsteins (not adjustable) on our Magnum RT.

I know it isn't a direct comparison because most manufacturers have different "applications" for different vehicles...

The Koni's on my Z improve handling considerably at the expense of a little ride quality. I track my Z a lot and prefer this compromise. It's tolerable on the few road trips I make in it every year, and it's great when driven hard.

That being said, the Bilsteins on the Magnum (moderately) improved the ride and the handling of our Magnum.

If the Bilsteins could do for my Z, what they did for our Magnum, I would prefer them for "daily driver" duty.

I mention oem replacement shock options and pretty much everything else you would need to know in this thread:

Little. Both are quality dampers.

The Z doesn't have struts. A strut looks like this:

It's actually a part of the suspension that holds the axle in position AND controls the movement. If you remove the strut, the axle/wheel falls over.

The Z has multi-link suspension to position the axles and shock absorbers to control the movement. The front shocks have seats for the springs, but they're still shocks, not struts.
