Default BJ: PFC brake pads

Hey BJ,

I just talked to the folks at Performance Friction, and they said that they have prepared pads for the Track Brembos for you (and other racing teams) in the 01 compound for the fronts and 97 for the rears. But JP at PFC said that to use them you have to turn off the ABS.

Why is that?

Would you recommend them for my occasional (1-2 days/month) track use, without switching off ABS? Are they hard on the rotors?

I assume they wouldn't be acceptable for street use between track days?

PFC race pads are for track use only. Do not turn off ABS!

Since my car is not a dedicated track car, turning off ABS is not an option for me, I was just wondering why he would say that. Is he saying they grip so much that the ABS will kick in and cause problems? Is he just wrong?

Would you recommend them for my HPDE use, switching to street pads when I'm not on track?

If not, do you have any other suggestions? Thanks.

01 is just too aggressive for my purposes, then?

Fred at Nitoma says he may order some fronts in 97 for Japanese customers. I'll encourage him.

Does anyone else want to share their recommendations for track pads for a medium-to-heavy HPDE-er? I've done 18 days since getting the car in Oct. 2002, and I'm planning on at least 12-15 days this year. I've been using Ferodo DS2500s, a combo street-track pad. But I'm ready to move to something more aggressive, even though it means changing pads at the track (which I didn't want to bother with before).

Would anyone who has tried a variety of pads on the Z care to compare their experiences regarding stopping power, wear, rotor damage, etc.?

For instance, I found the DS2500s to be a little stronger than the stock pads, but not a huge difference. They dusted about as much, and the wear was similar. (John says the stock pads are Ferodos. Maybe they are DS2500s!)

Has anyone tried the Nismo pads on track?

Thanks.

At Mid-Ohio, it seems that all of us will be pretty much using different pads, so it'll be interesting to do an informal comparison. I'm changing my fronts to Cobalt VR pads, which should hopefully give me the results I desire.

97's are not available any more unless they are ordred into production which would ema ordering 45 sets or so. PFC discontuinued the 97's a production part and we used all they had last year. We are running the 01 compound now. Ijust preffer the 97's.

You can check here for some pad recommendations. I don't know if they have the track size in all compounds though.
