Question: Hawks HPS Brake pads.
hello all.
I just received Hawks HPS brake pads.
And I wanted to install it by myself but my dealer svc advisor said I have to have rotor work done before i do that.
Is that true?
Dealer saying: different pads has different temputer sensitiblity and it will wear differently.
So I would have brake problem and it wil not cover by warranty.
If its true, I have to spend 135 dollars to install pads/ rotor works.
Is it true and worthy it?
Please help me.

He is probably recommending that you have your rotors turned for even pad wear. If you do the work yourself, many places like AutoZone will turn your rotors for about $5 each.
Just remember that the dealer is ALWAYS wanted to sell *his* service and *his* parts. Just my $0.02.

No, you don't have to turn your rotors, but, it's not a bad idea. Just make sure they don't turn it for too long. Some places will keep turning the rotors for an extended period of time so that you will need to replace your rotors sooner.
Uro, turning your rotors is done by puting the rotors on a lathe that strips off a layer of rotors to make it a flat surface.

gamblerz, thank you very much for your response.
i will change pads by myself and will go to autozone for rotor turns.
my local dealer asked 135 dollars for installing my hawks pads and turning my front rotors.
thank you for saving me from fooling by dealer.

isugoo,
As long as your rotors do not have some sort of pad deposition, or if they are worn beyond minimum thickness, they should be fine. I (and many, many others) swap pads in like we change shirts...particularly between race and street pads, which have massively different characteristics. They are made of very different compounds, interact with the rotors differently because of this difference in friction, and they have copletely different temperature ranges in which they are effective. It sounds to me like your dealer is trying to part you from a little more green.
For more on pad deposition, and the results on rotors...check this link: http://www.stoptech.com/whitepapers/...otors_myth.htm

thank you all professional helpers.
i will change brake pads by myself and I will not turn rotors.
i really don't know car things well but i want to have clear wheels since i have no place to clean up my car w/o paying money. but did i chose right pads? less dust, no noise. (i'm not a street racer)
and I can't believe that my dealer is that crazy to eat my money.
he said, 135 is great deal for replacing 2 pads and turning 2 rotors. and he said also that he will give me 10% off bcuz i'm a great customer.
what a big lie to eat my money i earn so hard!!!
if any car dealer says they are christians, i will throw a rock to them (or their cars).

Hey isugoo,
I have about 31k miles on my car and I just replaced my pads like yesterday. I came across the same situation of whether or not to turn the rotors. After asking around its not mandatory but it may contribute to the squeal that many ppl hear after they install new pads because having the brakes squeal with new pads and a completely parallel rotors is less likely. Squeal = usually an audible high frequency vibration between the pad and rotor like a needle on a record type deal.
As for me I inspected my rotors and it started to concave from the outer edge so I definitely needed to turn them anyways.
Third DONT BRING IT TO A REG SHOP! Bring your rotors to a Machine Shop dont let a regular goofball touch them because he might not really care about how much he takes off and you'll find yourself under the mininum thickness.
Talking to the machinist who was working on my rotors said bringing back the rotors to stock spec. should bring back initial braking power I once had when I first bought the car. Even if the differences are negligible its still peace of mind that my pads
are flush with the surface from the get go.
On a side note it didnt seem like it but as I was watching him cut the rotors the side that faces the dust field definitely had uneven wear as opposed to the otherside. If you're brake pads next to the dust shield is more worn out than the front I would suspect the same thing.
P.S. I installed Hawks HPS as well and so far after correct bedding no squeal whatsoever and NO DUST.

Before you ask, here is a good place to check what "bedding" is:

I have hawk hps on the Z and ebc greenstuff on the G. The ebc pads dust less and are quieter for daily driving. If you haven't yet purchased the hawks, I would go with the greenstuff instead. If you have purchased the hawks, don't sweat it, they are far better than stock.

thank you 2003 z. (by the way, i love yout icon picture)
i already bought the hawks hps pads.
i was planning to buy greenstuff but it seem like so many people complained about their greenstuff.
but i didn't see many many people who complain about noise or dust of hawks.
i drive a bit aggrasively but i don't race or any.
i just wonder its really less dust/ no noise brake pads than stock front. thats all i want.

Hmm, I just changed out my fronts to the HPS pads and went for a drive about 30 miles. When I got back, I rubbed my finger on my back wheels (I had just washed the car before) and I made a nice line in the dust on the wheel. I went and did the same on the front wheel and NOTHING, not a single dust particle!! I also had LESS squeaking with the HPS pads (though I did only dive them 30 miles or so). The factory pads used to squeak at low speeds, not a peep from the Hawk (KOW)!! Lets hope they stay that way!
