At 17, Should I Get A 350z As My First Car?

Who are you to judge anyone based on what they have? Everyone who seems to "deserve it" makes it sound like making money and paying your own way is the only way to deserve anything. There will ALWAYS be people more fortunate/richer than you, but apparently that gives you the right to trash on them. I'm a 22 year old corporate accountant, college educated and all, and I still don't pay for anything. But I suppose that makes me a POS right? You know almost nothing about me, but I'm probably going to be dubbed just some punk momma's boy that's doesn't know how to appreciate anything. To some people, Money means NOTHING.
Back to the OP. Don't put your family through any unnecessary hardship for a car. There are so many other important things. Really try viewing the pro's and con's from an outside perspective, covering all your bases. A Z is nice, but there are plenty of other cars that are more much practical.

And then as you graduate (even though, some may say the 280zx is a step down perf wise), you will be able to appreciate the nuances of each car. The Z is torquey, yes, but if you know how to drive it it's just fine. I've had my car for about 10 months now and I think i'm fairly decent at it. I guess the overall scary thing, encompassing this, is the adage (or is it?) that if you have money you have to spend it...why not get a job, earn your car? There are young people on this board (myself included) who work for our car. It's not really a burden, but I feel nice when I make that check out every month b/c I know it's my work and responsibility. But when people do those things for you..IE paying for the car, what do you really learn?

Well, without reading the other 7 pages and at the risk of getting flamed I say go for it. My first car was a G35 Coupe (still driving it of course, and love it) and a friend of my (18) just got a Z. Both cars are great. If you do decide to get a Z, do not flaunt it. Don't act spoiled, have a little fun but don't show off. In person, all I get about my car are compliments, just make sure you conduct yourself right. On the forums...well, just dont mention your age and try to sound mature and everything will be fine

Isn’t the Z supposed to be an affordable sports car?
I think it's veryy reasonably priced, and I don’t see why a 17 year old shouldn't have one, whether he is paying for it or not.
Yes, maybe THIS situation is a little different, but if some kid has parents who can afford it, then why not?
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I’m young, and would like to enjoy a sports car while I am young. I just don't see myself driving a Z in 10 years (probably being a mom by then). I can't imagine my dad driving one either...

buying the car will certainly be the first step. i'm 21 and receiving monthly payments from scholarships, and i see most of that going to maintenance, petrol, insurance and monthly payments. if you can JUST afford the car, i recommend that you get something cheaper as many have suggested in this thread; this will definitely relieve the financial burden off your parents. furthermore, buy buying the car, you will probably have to cut back on many other things on a great degree...you won't have any money to buy new gear, may even have to scrounge on food and drinks and skip activities with your mates...in that sense, is every other aspect in your life (including family) of less importance than what you drive?
In my personal opinion, you should get something else. Get a beater so you can appreciate having a nice car later. From what it sounds like, this can be a finanncial burden. So what would your parents do if something happened to the z? I am 20 year old Iraqi War Veteran, and I still think I am too young for the Z. And I was handeling multimillion dollar pieces of equipement and if i didn't do my job, troops outside would be left without communications. I pay for my own college, insurance, and the car, so please don't flame me for having mommy buy it for me, lol. Had to say it just in case.
if i was 17 i would definately get a Z, however would I let my son get one as his 1st car? NO! Age i do not think matters, if you are mature and experienced enough then I would say go for it, but as your 1st car, nah..
The Z is my second car and i worked hard (not really, but i worked for it) myself. I just turned 20 (ughh i hate telling the truth) and I really thought that it was a big jump going from a del sol to this. Now i'm thinking about down grading and it sucks! If i were you i would think about how much i would hate down grading in cars more than anything else.
no way in hell this should be anyones 1st car!!!!! parents are dumb as hell if they get the z for their kids 1st car. you are just asking to get rid of your kid early.
when you 1st start to drive you hsould have a POS that would not matter if you crash it , you are still learning how to drive, i say give it a year of on road driving then maybe look into getting a z.
not only that but insurance would be high.
not very smart dont get one as your new car!

just joking.
hey aren. if u get a Z man enjoy it because its a badass car. but by enjoy it i mean dont kill urself and if ur going to drive fast learn somewhere safe first like somewhere that no pedestrians or debree is around. take it to a race track with an instructor and learn how to handle it because their's only 1 way to find out how to drive a fast car and i think it is experience with one. its a powerful car and u outta learn how to drive it so u can enjoy it by cruzin the streets or racing on the track.
