Dealer Wants An Offer From Me - What's My Amount?
put your thinking caps on, and pay close attention to all these numbers......
i had a Nissan dealer in the area today call me with the following information. he has a 2008 San Marino Blue/Frost Interior 350Z with $34,500 on the sticker. he wanted to know what price it will take to get my business, to get me as a customer.
now, i dont want to offend the dealer, but i want to take advantage of every thing that i can, within reason. assuming my SUV is worth anywhere from $6,600 to $8,200 on a trade, that leaves $27,900 to $26,300 as the difference. he also has some wiggle room in that according to Edmunds and KBB the SUV should bring around $11,000 to $12,000.
so, posters, what do i offer him? i already have an offer of my SUV plus $23,000 on a 2008 Red 350Z with $32,280 on the sticker from a closer dealer. and i nevered dickered with the dealer on this one, so i assume he might very well take $22,000.
now, this San Marino Blue/Frost 350Z todays dealer found is a little over $2,000 more than the Red 350Z. so, the offer at the dealer today has to basically want my SUV plus $24,000 for them to be considered equal.
last week the dealer i was at today was blowing off about how they would beat any deal by a $1,000, and would do whatever it took to get my business. so, should i call him back tomorrow and tell him it will take $23,000 and my SUV to get my business? or should i low ball him, and tell him $22,000 and my SUV and you can call it a deal?
hope this wasnt too confusing. i appreciate any help.

offer them what the other dealership wants for the red one, tell them that's what it will take for you to sign the papers, be prepared to sign right on the spot if they tell you.
Otherwise he will counter with the lowest he could do.

Here is the sequence:
1) Figure out what model you are buying.
2) Go to a bank and arrange a loan (estmating how much you need)
3) Determine what price you are willing to pay (generally $2000-$3000 below MSRP)
4) Go to dealer and ONLY negociate price (not payment; not worth of tradein)
5) After getting price, see what they will give you for current car.
6) (Optional) Give dealer a chance to beat your financing.
7) Read the paperwork SLOWLEY & THOROUGHLY to be sure dealer is not charging you one dime over agreed price plus tax & license.
8) When offered extended warranty say "no" and tell them if you have to say it a second time, your walking.
Don't worry about being nice; dealers don't deserve nice.

go UNDER what you are willing to pay.
worked for me since I got mine under dealer invoice and WELL under MSRP.
then they want to "meet in the middle" but too bad the middle is where you truely want to pay and you win. kthxgimmekeysbai!

For the best deal, get at least five email quotes from dealers in your area. You will be surprised how desperate some dealers are. After you get a few offers, contact the dealer with the service and price you like best. The first thing they will do is try to contact you by phone. Don't put a bogus # but don't speak with them until you get an offer. Sometimes, they will try to get you to come in with out a price. But if you take you time (week or so) you can get the best deal with minimal effort.

My loca ldealers are nearing the "give away" point of Z's. Dont knwo why. But im sure its not a localized event. the sticker on mine was 30,100. base black z. I got the car for 24,200 plus ttl. I hear that the dealer i bought mine from is selling base 08s for the same price. And they are selling GT-rs for only 10k over msrp. my .02. Bring them a quote from thier main competition. They will beat the price to get the sale. Negotiate the price BEFORE you tell them u want to trade in.

spending this much $$$ for a car is a big deal to me. its not something you do too many times in your life - at least i dont. at least for me, its a very difficult decision, and getting others opinions sometimes helps.

i called the dealer today, told him my thoughts, and what i was offered on another car by another dealer. i reminded him that they guaranteed me they would do whatever it took to get my business and would give me a $1,000 better deal. then i basically told him what price it would probably take.
so, this salesman then starts asking me what color that car is, whats the MSRP, where its located, what dealer found it for me, etc, etc.
i give him some info off the top of my head, and he said he didnt remember seeing that car, and he was going to search around to try and find it.
should i be ticked off here? i felt like i was getting grilled.

You could do like I did when I bought my last car. I walked into the dealership presidents office, pointed out his window at the car and said I want that car, delivered to my house today, I left a down payment check and 5 hours later they drove up at my house and I signed the paperwork at my kitchen table. I probably didn't get the best deal but damn did I enjoy doing it. lol
