I can't imagine lighter fluid being safe for the clearcoat or paint.
I was thinking the same thing that's why I am using bug and tar remover. But I know lighter fluid works, and so does WD40. Many people use the two without any issues!

I know I'm ressurecting this thread, but lighter fluid is perfectly safe. It's a petroleum distillate, just like WD-40, only purer. It (naptha) is used in carnuaba waxes and other paint care products, so that should tell you something.
I used it when a piece of blown-out tire struck the fender of my old car (which was white) and left a nasty black rubber streak. It took the rubber right off and left the clear coat quite intact. Just be sure to clean and re-wax.
