Buff Swirls in my Totaled Z Replacement
I totaled my Z as mentioned in a previous thread. I have found an amazing 2005 DB Roadster exactly like my 2004 ZR, only with 40,000 less miles. Everything is great about the car except when I looked at it closer under the sun the dealer swirled the **** out of it with the buffer. I am assuming since the car shows NO paint chips on the hood that they buffed the crap out of it until the chip marks dissapeared, hoping to fool the customer. I would rather have chip marks than the UP and Down trail of Buffer swirls all over the front hood and trunk cover.
Question is, the paint looks great, so I assume it's just clear coat damage. Can this be removed or is the only way to get rid of it to buy a Carbon fiber hood and get it painted.
I can't beleive they F'd up an otherwise perfect car.

should not be a problem to correct the paint. go to autopia.com and start reading about machine buffing. you can either buy all the equipment, which will cost at least a couple hundred bucks, and attack it yourself. or you can find someone on that forum to hire and do it for you (also a couple hundred bucks or possibly more depending how bad the paint is).

Zaino baby: Z2 and Z5 with some ZFX (for high humidity areas) and some Z-8 SPRAY. Fab results (see my sig) and low cost.

What exactly causes the swirl marks from the buffer as opposed to the swirl marks caused from scratches from washing the car with the wrong equipment?
I'm new to this stuff. Thanks.
If it looks like spiderwebs all over it, it's probably someone who didn't know how to use a buffer correctly, or wrong pad choice. If that's the way it looks, a good polish and right buffing technique should fix it.
You should check out the autopia.org forums. There is tons of info on buying the right equipment, and trying it yourself. If it's something you don't feel comfortable with, you could always get a good detailer to get it back in good condition, and then take care of the car from that point.

I just talked to a detail shop, they said it's pretty common when dealerships try to buff a car. They called it hologramming(sp?), which is a great description for the look.
Fortunately he said it's very superficial and easier to take out than the spider webs, so they figure $100 for the Trunk and hood. Not a bad deal.
Thanks for the input guys! Hopefully I will have some good news soon about picking up my replacement Z.
It's almost like bringing home a new puppy after your faithful dog of 14 year passed away.

you can't get rid of them. the body shop that installed my body kit buffed my car before I picked it up and it look great.......until the wax wore off and then it was swirl city! I have had the car Zaino'd and rebuffed. It's looks great until the wax wears of and then the swirl marks are visible again. I am just going to repaint the entire car.
I talked to a detail shop and they said it shouldn't be a problem to polish it out. The called the effect, hollographing(or something like that) which is a perfect description of the swirl effect. The swirling effect is definitely more shallow than the typical swirls you get from washing the car, and those can be removed through polishing.
Until they actually try to do it I won't know for sure. But you might want to check with a professional detailing shop before you go to that extent.
I hope for both our sakes it doesn't take repainting the car to get it fixed. Ouch!

Of course they are going to tell you that they want your money. I would ask for a garuantee from them that if the swirls come back they must refund your money. I've checked out a professional detailing shop and they told me the same thing.....they could take car of it. They spent a whole day on my car using Zaino products. Like I said previously after you get detailed the swirls will not be visible, but when the wax wears off you will see them again. Basically the wax or compound will hide the swirls so unless you detail the car every two weeks they will reappear. Really the only way to remove them is to get the car wet sanded or repainted. I went to one of the best body shops in town and they quoted me to $2,600 to wet sand the entire car and repaint my hood and front bumper (I have alot of scratches). For a little more I would wather just repray the entire car.
Wow that's rough. I had not bought the car yet when I talked to the detailer shop. He said not to worry about it, it wasn't a deal killer. I wasn't about to buy a car that had damaged paint. He explained that what I have is easier to correct than the typical paint swirls from washing.
This shop isn't going to Zaino the car(basically try to fill in the swirls) but rather use an abrasive polish to remove enough of the clear coat to remove the imaging. That's what they do to remove the regular swirl marks, so it should work on this holographic pattern since it isn't as deep as the swirl marks.
Right now it's so minor I don't feel like wasting the time or money to get it fixed. But I will let you know how it turns out when I do have them do it. I sure hope I don't end up paying $100 for a wax job on the hood and rear trunk lid!

zaino is so overrated. There are so much better for the money. if there are major swirls and halogram, you need to get optimum polish.. I would use an orange pad then use a white bad with a glaze to get some micro marring out.
Just got the car done. They guy at Detailers Paradise in Denver did an amazing job. For only $50(half the price he estimated over the phone) he was able as promised to remove the holograming on the trunk lid, hood and even the fender flares. He did that plus removed 98% of where it looked like the buffer might have had the cover slip off and scratched the hood up by the windshield. Interestingly you absolutely couldn't see it in the sun, but in the shade or in the garage it was as plain as day, but now it doesn't look any different from the typical light spider webs you get from washing a car.
The bird crap unfortunately etched in pretty deep to the clear coat so he didn't want to risk wearing it down to the paint so I will just have to deal with that.
Boulder Nissan did a TERRIBLE job of taking care of that car while it was on their lot. I have no idea how long that bird crap sat on the side of the car, but that was totally unnecessary damage and the only one that really couldnt' be fully repaired.
But again Major Props to Detailer Paradise in Denver for a job well done. He even clay barred the car before he did that other stuff becuase the paint really needed it.
